Isiah Jacobs: Jasonafex, thank you so much for coming onto the show! It's a great pleasure to have you on the show!
Jason: Glad I could pop in and make an appearance!
Isiah Jacobs: You've made quite a name for yourself in the furry fandom as an animator, but before we get into that, let's start from the beginning. Have you always felt that you were a furry? Or was it an interest you found as you got older?
Jason: A past relationship had introduced me into the fandom, although I didn't really pay much attention to my account until roughly 8 months ago when I decided I'd flesh out one of my favourite characters I would recreate in games and turn that into a fursona of sorts! I've always had an inclining for furry art though. My account was pretty much gathering dust for well over a year, FA was very scarce on allowing new registrations at the time!
Isiah Jacobs: Oh! Wow! You raised up through the ranks fairly quickly! How long ago were you introduced to the fandom?
Jason: I had a girlfriend I had met a couple years ago who turned out to be fairly netted into the furry community so she got me to sign up! I wasn't really comfortable at the time rushing into it though. Was allot nicer slowly weaning into things a while later
Isiah Jacobs: The furry community didn't seem that appealing to you?
Jason: Was just foreign and intimidating, wasn't aware of the social aspect!
Isiah Jacobs: So, when your girlfriend first showed you about furries, were the naughtier pictures the first ones you saw?
Jason: The internet has a way of introducing you to furry art well before you stumble across the hub-world, the art has just flourished since then!
Isiah Jacobs: What made you want to slowly start integrating yourself in the community?
Jason: I noticed I started really enjoying playing as lizardy characters in more recent games and the such and having a blast designing and creating them. I thought it'd be fun putting 'em to paper and the best bet was to do so on FA!
Isiah Jacobs: Yeah, I was just going mention that in a bit! Let's talk about your fursona. Why did you decide on a raptor hybrid?
Jason: I've always been a huge fan of dinosaurs, the colour green also being my favourite colour so the two where a match made in heaven really. He was originally designed to be just a lizard but overtime became more and more raptor-like due to the more crazy ways he could be illustrated, posed and featured
Isiah Jacobs: I understand that you visit Second Life frequently. Would that have anything to do with it?
Jason: I had a fair amount of buzz with the game when I first discovered it, I play it rather sparsely now, been a couple of months! It offered a nice challenge to recreate my Fursona in 3D and it turned out to be a lot of fun! I revisit the game when friends would like help doing the same for their fursonas
Isiah Jacobs: Would you say that your experience in the fandom has opened your mind to alternative sexual preferences? Or have you considered yourself pansexual long before you were a furry?
Jason: I tend to comment and favourite on a variety of artworks from every corner of the gender spectrum, pansexual is just the easiest way of explaining it. Gender or sexual preference doesn't really have an impact on my liking for it. Good art is good art! Sexuality wise I've only been with females and am currently in a pseudo relationship with another girl.
Isiah Jacobs: Okay, I was just wondering if the furry community had impacted you in regards to that. And I would definitely have to agree with you! Have you been working on animation before you were a furry as well?
Jason: Nope, I actually only started as a way to show my thanks to the first person who I had commissioned and his bang-up job on the sketch for my character, as a token of thanks! I was fiddling with the software at the time and thought it would be neat to try and animate something 2D.
The feedback for it was surprisingly positive so I went on to make more. I made quite a few animations completely Scott free before time restraints began to outweigh demand, commission prices being the best way to keep making them as well as gauging who wanted one made the most. I still do the occasional free animation here and there.
Isiah Jacobs: Well if you're not a professional animator, what do you do for a living?
Jason: I currently work part-time at my local newspaper as a graphics designer
Isiah Jacobs: With so much animation experience under your belt, do you think you might want to go somewhere with that?
Jason: I'm not too sure where what I've learned would apply in a workplace environment, think it'll stay as just a fun hobby.
Isiah Jacobs: You don't think you've learned quite a bit with cutting and filling when you animate?
Jason: It's far easier picturing the missing pieces to a puzzle then to make something from scratch. While I'd love to be able to illustrate most of what i do is mainly mechanical with a mouse and keyboard.
Isiah Jacobs: What would you say is the best piece you'd had the most fun animating?
Jason: Probably Flamedramon loveseat by Narse http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8035996/ as not only is he one of my favourite artists but the image already had a version with and without penetration, making animation a must. I also played around messing with perspective and gave an almost 3D look so how the camera moved around the room. I also got carried away and made another animation just for the TV. I ended up releasing that as a stand-alone for those who wanted to see it closer. Originally it was going to be an Easter egg when clicking the TV screen, going to a filtered close-up of the TV with a few options. Though that inflated the file size a bit too much
Isiah Jacobs: What made you decide to include voice acting in some of your animations?
Jason: I always strive for at least one improvement with every submission, voice acting sounded like a good step after adding sound in general!
Isiah Jacobs: Have there been any other animators that have been an inspiration or influenced you?
Jason: A main inspiration for me was the lack of animations or animators in general, as well as the crazily high prices users would offer to make them. I decided I could do something similar for free so off I went! I don't really see my peers as competition but more so a good thing as it's bringing more artwork to life and they are always fun to watch. I do love Washa and Horses 2D work, and Horses 3D work is just astounding. As well as TaurenFox. The amount of work that would go into 3D is insurmountable
Isiah Jacobs: Going forward, is there anything else you look forward to delving into? Writing? Or composing?
Jason: Art really, I'd love to step away from the comfort zone of a mouse and draw as well as animate, would open allot of doors.
Isiah Jacobs: Definitely looking forward to that, then! One last question before I let you go; digitigrade or plantigrade?
Jason: Digigrade!
Isiah Jacobs: And why is that?
Jason: Leads to some very awesome designs both character and outfit wise!
Isiah Jacobs: Agreed! Jason, thank you so much for joining me today! Again, it's been a pleasure having you on! Who knows? Maybe something will come up and I can have you back on the show again!
Jason: My pleasure as always!
