What burdened hands of grief
beset upon a thief
can comprehend the consequence of theft?
A single loaf of bread
condemns the man as dead
and leaves a family poor and frail bereft.
The local consul rules
to make a mock of fools;
to leave the corpse of failure hanging high.
And dragged through town to rot
a symbol on the spot
where man and god will watch the victim die.
A lash of twisted bone.
The skin is torn, and shown
is blood that spills and soaks the legate's croft.
Impaled by rusty nails
the hands and feet on rails
of splintered bark, a dogwood tomb aloft.
And hanging short of breath
on verge of painful death
beside a man of innocence denied.
A soul accused of vice:
"Today in paradise
will you be found, a rest beneath my side."

The second poem of Halloweek! I do hope you enjoy it. :3
This one started a bit more sinister, but ended up as a religious piece. I just wasn't feeling the brutality tonight. X3
Feedback is greatly appreciated! Motivate me, people! :P

This is really really neat. A very solemn look at the good thief on the cross beside Jesus.
