One day I'll look at writing something like a short story that fills in some of the gaps I glossed over in my first novel, The Cold Wind; specifically regarding what happened between Tainui and the Vanguard engineer Attacks-First. I hinted that there was some sort of relationship between these two, but never went into any great detail about it at the time as I wasn't certain how such an interspecies relationship would be viewed by the readers.
Attacks-First in something approaching a state of complete contentment at being so close to someone he thinks the world of. Although a lot more intelligent and less obsessed than the warrior Blue-Scale from my second novel, he also has a bit of a fixation on a squirmy little human

Thank you I love it when an artist can really 'put a face' to characters that mean a lot to me, especially in a situation that I have often thought about but never actually written. It is quite inspirational. Thanks for the nice comment!

Heh, well spotted, ErnstD It is indeed in the period between Tai forgiving Attacks-First for his drug-fueled sexual assault and when the Original Home forces attacked. If I was ever to go back and revisit TCW, I'd probably expand on this relationship more rather than just hinting at it.

Heh, Attacks-First developed a bit of a crush on the one being that showed him respect and friendship, despite that person not being one of his own kind. So he's in his 'happy place' being so close to the one he likes so much

Thank you I don't think I will ever 'revisit' the original novel, but I am tempted to write a bit of an addendum to it at some point, giving some attention to the 'more than friendship' relationship these two developed over that period.

Wow, this looks just sooooo adorable. Such vivid pics nearly make me cry, so adorable do they look. Looks somehow like Tainui is doing is homework after a hard days work and Attacks-First is assisting him. ^^
Tainui had a lot to learn in a short time regarding many different aspects of Vanguard life... technology, culture, language, history, biology... so you paint a good picture: homework Nobody likes doing it, most people like having a gentle tutor guiding them with it.
I can recall remotely that there was a device mentioned that could upload the data directly into one's brain, but still I guess it would take a lot to process all this stuff.

Judging by where that hand seems to be headed, I'd say A-F is thinking more about trying to distract Tai than assist him.

Dude, you ever went back and filled in some of the blanks on your first cold wind novel, I would read that in a heart beat, I'd always wondered how deep Tainui and Attacks-First relationship went and I bet that it would be something that would be well received here.

Slumping to the deck, he held the water canister in shaking hands and glanced despondently around, seeking inspiration. Inspiration which appeared in the form of a small number of pictures he'd asked Attacks-First to print out for him off his digicam, lying together on the deck amongst a few other scattered items from his backpack.
His breath caught in his throat when he thought about Attacks-First back on New Home. Tainui shook his head slightly, wondering if the young engineer was even still alive. Over the past couple of years their relationship had become something more than just friendship. There had been quite a few occasions of physical intimacy between the two of them but he sensed the Vanguard had been holding back a bit as if waiting for some cue from him.
What I was sort of hinting at there was A-F was hesitant about pushing the relationship further into really serious territory until Tai made the first move, something Tai wasn't likely to do. In my mind's eye Tai liked A-F as something of a 'friend with benefits' or 'any port in a storm' as opposed to actually loving him as he did with Andrej. That said, it is something that I could explore a bit more at some point. Thank you for your support for the concept though!
