This is the newest member of my little family, Her name is Belladonna but we call her Bella for short. She is a Dumbo rat, I have always wanted one and my boyfriend got her for me a few days ago, I love her.
She's a silly little girl, she loves to run around, she's always on the move, and is adapting well, I rescued her from Petsmart, I say rescued because some little kid was banging on the glass and telling his mom he wanted the black and white one, when I got there. I waited for them to walk away for a minute and then I got her out of there real quick, The kid reminded me of that little girl in Finding Nemo.
Anyways this is my lovey Bella.

Do you have another rat? Rats need friends as they are extremely social creatures and can get depressed to the point of self-harm without another rat around. No amount of human socialization will be the equivalent to another rat.
I have 4 boys and now 4 girls, I know they get lonely without the ompany of another rat.
First off, let me say that I'm not trying to start anything flamey here, but I would like to gently disagree with you. I definitely believe a rat is happier with a friend, (especially if you don't have time to socialize with it a lot) but I think a rat can be healthy and happy on its own provided you give it lots of attention, and plenty of playtime to keep it occupied.
I've had both rat pairs, and single rats and I've never had an issue with the rats I've owned that lived by themselves. Granted, I've got the time to play with them a lot of and take them out of the cage all the time. The rat I have right now I thought would be lonely after her cage mate died, but to be honest I think if I tried to get her a new friend now she wouldn't like it. She seems to enjoy having the cage to herself (which is funny because it's like a huge mansion cage that could easily house at least four rats) heh.
Just my two cents. I think as long as a person understands that a rat is social creature, and takes care of their pet accordingly I think a rat can live a good life without a cage mate. Just my opinion.

I agree with you thrre, I have had a single rat in the past as well and he did fine by himelf, I just know that some don't do so well by themselves and prefer to be with another rat. In my opinion I think it really just depends on the rat, Some prefer to be an only rat and others don't lke being without a cage mate.
Just because your rat seemed happy, doesn't mean that is the norm. Unless you can spend literally 24/7 with your rat (never sleeping), you will never come close to the company of another rat. Rats are happier and healthier with other rats around. There are the occasional rats that are other rat aggressive, and sometimes older rats do prefer to be alone, but this is not the norm and should not be assumed to be the norm. No self-respecting breeder, owner, etc. would ever suggest a rat to be kept alone, or that keeping rats alone is ok. Ever.

The one I had in the past did well but he sleptwith me and I had a puch that I made for him so he was always with me, I do believe he was happy. I didn't knowa whole lot about ratsback then either though but like I said I do believe he was happy, He boggled and bruxed and snuggled and socially groomed me, I wwas his "cage mate"
Aww!! Such a sweet story!! I got my parakeet from Pet Smart. He fell in a glue trap and lost a bunch of feathers so the Banfield vet was going to put him down D: They put him in a box and just gave him to me.
I'm sure she's glad to be out of there!

When she was still in the cage at petsmart she was really lazy and sometimes silly, I had seen her 2 days before and I fell in love and then when my boyfriend said he would get me a dumbo I instantly knew what one I wanted and prayed she would still be there so I was prettty excited and happy when she was. I think she is happy to be out of there, when I picked her up to put her in the carrier I took with me to petsmart, she snuggled my face n neck and it felt like she was saying thank you.
Rats are precious! I've been wanting one but you can't have rodents on a military base ._.
That sucks, seriously, why won't they let you? Its not like you're bringing wild animal on base, lol.
I guess they could get loose and cause an infestation. It's like, no rodents or reptiles, and there are breed bans.. which we're breaking.. but shhhh.... I'm not getting rid of my dogs.
I hear you there, I have a pit bull and she is my world as well as my ratties and if anyone ever told me I couldn't have my little family I would die.
♥ ♥
Wish I could have ratties of my own
