Managed to take this photo when we were darting and relocating four of our big male lions. I got to be a vet tech for the day... it was definitely one of the highlights of all my experiences out there. And yes, their paws are HUGE!

those weren't ticks, those were flies.. though they did have quite a few ticks too
Thank you for sharing the photo, I looks awesome. Being so close to these creatures must be simply ... indescribable! I'd wish I had this opportunity. :3
Oh, and sorry but I can't resist: It looks funny where your left paw seems to be! :P

It is just as amazing as you'd imagine, if not moreso! They're incredible animals, especially when you get to work with them in person.
And lol, yeah, i suppose that does look a little suspicious...

well, lions ARE huge and powerful, just look in the mirror and you see what i mean
hehe, thanks It has its moments... though it's a lot colder than you would think for Africa! Course, it's winter here, so I guess that figures.
“Colder”? Heh, now that is a word I never would have associated with Central Africa at any time of the year.
I Envy You ..... i wanna get close to a lion toooooo
I wanted to become a vet like that but in my freaking damn country those days itwas not even damn possible ((
and now I am Very jealous :3

Think about how hard it would be to transport a large cat against his will in an open-backed vehicle. Que Benny Hill theme song while the whole crew chases said lion across the savannah. Are those flies on the lion's side?
Darting = animal tranquilizers delivered from a distance.
Rafiki: *smiling proudly* It is time.
The old mandrill, smiling proudly, solemnly bows and indicates that Simba is to ascend to the crest of Pride Rock
Simba: *looks up at Pride Rock, then slowly makes his way to the crest*
Mufasa's ghost: Remember...
Simba: *looks down, smiles confidently, then raises his head, inhales...and yelps* What the fu- *passes out*
200 miles away
*Simba wakes up*
Simba: *looks around at the unfamiliar land*...aw, maaaan. Back to square one.

Infinite potential for sequels...Disney just wasn't thinking straight. They could take it all the way up to 5 or more movies with that little twist. Almost like Quantum Leap. Simba gets darted, wakes up somewhere else, fixes it up, then gets darted and relocated again. Repeat.
"Every time Simba gets darted...he hopes that dart will be the one...that takes him home."

That is one HOT lion! Oh, and the one that's knocked out is pretty cute looking too :)
Wow. Awesome. And still managing to look good.....Nice to see you enjoying your work Lion.
Nope, first time working with darted lions.. and these guys were far too big for even me to tackle by myself
This reminds me of the paw in the paw print shot from TLK....only with a ball cap and glasses and other people and......yeah
.... you need a " Hi My Name Is " badge with Androcles filled in the blank
Lots of hard work and hardship but still I would love to do it too!
I wear my tail 24/7 to show my pride in lions as magnificent creatures and to honor them as they are being endangered by man.
I'm glad there are folks like you doing that to help save the lions. I wish the folks on these comments knew both the difficulty of the job and living there as well as how bad it is for the lions being killed off like is happening to them.
Nice to see you in the flesh too!

Yeah, it's shocking how many people don't know how bad things really are... and even more shocking to realize how many people simply don't care = /
Most people have a lot of misconceptions. Until you spend time near real big cats, you'd be surprised how many people still have the "warm, cute, cuddly thing going on when it comes to lions and tigers too. The truth can be both amazing and more than a little jarring. Firstoff, they are much bigger and far more solid than people think. Big cats feel sort of like a bag of bricks with a fur coat on. Not that they have sharp corners as such, it's just that for the most part they are very "dense" and up close you get a real reminder of where all that strength is.. I'll always remember smelling "Raw meat" breath and the feel their tongues. That, and the real scent of lions is something you never forget :) Are you tracking any of these boys?
Lovely picture, Keep on!

lol, this is where I live and work... a reserve in central Zimbabwe
Awesome! I'd love to work with lions someday :) You don't need a vet over there by any chance, do you? ^^'
WOAH!! you really weren't kiddding about going to Africa, that's so cool!!!
lol, yeah, i've just been at home hiding in my basement this whole time.. the entire thing was a sham. You discovered my secret.. now you must die!
ha! seroiously dude, that does sound like an awesome job. it's probably a helluva culture shock but I really think that is an amazing thing you did with your life. say hi to the kitties for me!
How cool! I miss you so much lion, I hope things are awesome out there for you. -=mwa=-
Although I'm happy you are living your dream, it makes me sad to hear about your loneliness there too. Not to worry though - we'll all make it up to you when you come back home
So am I, big lion. Hopefully all of the positive thoughts and well wishes being sent your way will help you during the times when you feel you need a friend. And when you do get back, I'm sure you will get so many pounce hugs that you'll be wishing you had some alone time again!
I see you are doing mighty fine big guy, and thats one fluffy paw!
Lol, that lady in the background is like "If that motherfucker takes one more picture of this stupid cat, I'm gonna get ALL up in his shit" *black lady Z-snap*
Yeah, I am well aware how huge lions actually are thanks to my trip to the zoo. One happened to be sleeping right on the other side of the glass so I was able to get close enough to truly compare size. It's humbling.
LOL at the placement of your hand...and the girl on the right!
Great to see how you're doing and the work going into helping the lions. Even if you are lonely, at least you are doing your part and enjoying being with the cats themselves.

lol, yeah, being up next to them is one thing... but having to pick them up, move them around, and work on them like that gives you a whole new appreciation for how massive they really are!
And hush you, you weren't supposed to notice that
And hush you, you weren't supposed to notice that
I can only imagine! Must be quite something touching them, feeling those muscles and the fur and mane, smelling them...
And yet several others noticed it already before me. We can't be fooled.

You look like a kid in a candy store. ^_^
