Well, after 4 months of off-and-on work, my baby is finally complete! <3
It's been a long ride to complete my big baby. She started from the humble beginnings with 23 gourds and has evolved to the wonder she has become. It's been 103 hours and nearly $500 for her to come into being...but it's been worth it. I learned so much from the processes, and I tested skills I wasn't sure I had! But I didn't think about what I couldn't do, I just did it. My baby is now at the North Carolina zoo, where she's been donated to their annual benefit auction. She'll be auctioned in September. I'll get video of her being auctioned off, I hope she brings a lot to the zoo!
Here's her final stats:
30 inches tall
19 inches wide
40.5 inches long
weighs 38 pounds
103 hours of work
Supply list:
23 large gourds
2 expanding foam cans
3 large dowel rods for internal support
epoxy glue
liquid nails
quick grab glue
6 rolls of masking tape
100 sheets of blank newsprint
39 pounds of air drying clay
glass taxidermy eyes
wireform mesh for ears
5 bottles of superglue
2 full bottles of paint (black and white)
Brown, red, and yellow paint
1,000 cut horse hairs (brown and black)
1 full can of matte sealer and partial gloss

Thank you everyone for commenting, viewing, and supporting this long process. I WILL be making another large gourd sculpture next year to donate to the zoo. Please consider donating next year for the project. I couldn't do it without you!

i thought this was an actual elephent and i was about to say elephants have hair:O
Awwwww! That's the cutest thing ever! You did an amazing job and have every right to be proud of her. Congratulations!
I hope she does bring a lot of benefit to the zoo and whoever owns up owning her enjoys her for years to come. ^.^

Thank you! I feel like she's my baby and I let her go this afternoon to the zoo staff. They were ogling over her like she was a real baby. It was cute. :D
According to the auction coordinator, the two richest people in my area are already claiming it so there's going to be a bid war later this year

You're so incredibly talented. Just keep on doing what you're doing :3
Do baby elephants have little red hairs like that? That's adorable <3
Amazing freaking work though. The stuff you do with gourds in incredible.

Well they may not be red (they're more brown irl, my camera went on strike) but most very young babies have hair. Some just on their scalp, some all over! It's so cute to see a fuzzy baby!
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much!
Ah okay! That is damn adorable though <3 I want to noogie a baby elephant now~
I did that countless times to this girl...in fact, you can't help but to. SO FUZZY

THANK YOUUUUUUUU! Now I gotta figure out how to top this!...
X3 actually I'd considered making a giraffe that was 4-5 ft tall...again with not having a vehicle to transport it though. My elephant BARELY fit into my SUV
AHHH!! it's so cute! i wanna hug it and rub it's fuzzy head :D
I rubbed it's fuzzy head plenty of times....so one's for you! *highfive*
She was taken to the North Carolina Zoo today and has been donated to them. It'll stay at the zoo until they have their annual benefit auction in September. After that, some lucky rich person will have her in their house.
PHEW you have no idea! Kinda sad to see her go, but I had 4 months to prepare myself for the moment. My dad is happy atleast. He can have his workshop back XD
I'll keep you posted and take vids during the auction ^_^
When I 1st seen this picture my mouth dropped and was like OH WOW!You have really out done yourself! I bet you it will pitch a lot of money!
KUDOS TO YOU ART FROM THE HEART!

*happyflails* Thank you! I was really ambitious to even try this but it really paid off. ^_^ I hope it goes for a bunch! The rumors amongst the rich donors are already spreading.
AND THANK YOU SCALES FOR BEING A FAN! *bear hugs*

that has turned out really nicely. i especially like the face - it's surprisingly life like with the glass eyes. the whole thing is rather life like really. and it's hair is just adorable. i hope it raises alot of money. items like that must be very hard to estimate.
:D Thank you! I hope so too, the zoo staff was really ecstatic and they've already contacted their top buyers...so maybe the early attention will be a good thing. Yeah putting a value on it was really tough. I just added hours, multiplied it, added supply cost...and it went with a custom built wagon I need to show everyone. Totaled $2,500 but I think many will say that's really cheap for what it is. ^_^'
yeah, considering all the materials, man hours, and that it is an original one of a kind piece, it should have good value. (i need to stop starting my sentences with yeah).
WOW. You are AMAZING!
I mean .. if you told me there were gourds inside there, I'd look at you funny. But they're clearly in there. WOW.
