For a while, PussyCat has been going through a rough patch. She believes that her fursona is that much unique anymore. She browses through FA and alike, only to find other feline fursonas with white fur, long black hair, red eyes and black markings. She showed me these related images and artworks by various other furs, and since I've been drawing her fursona for so long in whatever she does or wants to be portrayed doing, I can easily point out that none of these other people's white feline fursonas/characters matches what she looks like. Being a bit stubborn, she believes that even her own personality is not that interesting anymore and/or have been copied by someone else's fursona. To sum everything up, she believes that she is not as unique as she was last year and she feels like she is starting to fade into the majority of the crowd. She likes attention like any other being in a vast fandom. That could be good or bad, depending on how you want to get it. She also brought up a related topic about how she emotionally connects to a certain MLP character, Derpy Hooves. But that is for something later. I drew this picture for her in a related pose from when I saw her in. I threw Wozzle there since I haven't drawn him in a while.
In all, I thought it was a good point to bring up. Since 99% of the furry fandom have fursonas, what are the odds that someone's fursona is copied or inspired by another? Are any fursona's as unique as they were years ago? Personality, physical appearance, name, height, weight, favs and hates, etc. How often have you encountered someone else's fursona that looks and/or acts the same as your own and you feel that small amount of uniqueness is gone from your character? These are just small random questions and came up in my head while talking to her and drawing this. Everyone has a unique image of themselves that make them stand out in the crowd, but what if you start to see your idea character/fursona/whatever fade into the background and become less unique and more "common"?
Food for thought, but I would love to hear your opinion on this subject matter. Might help a bit.

Personally, id say she's unique in the simple beauty of her character, of course this is coming from a feathered fox with a mechanical arm
There is the element that is inspiration, but i know people whos fursonas are made just to fit into a specific crowd, not really to be unique.
thats about all i can say... ^^'

There's only one PussyCat and I wouldn't have it any other way.
The answer for me is none at all. :) A wolf orca is rare and when i did worca, i was rare and on my own. People threw the idea of it being stolen from a pokemon but that wasn't the case. Since then, a few others have come up that are the general idea but no one will ever be like me. Not because they can't take my idea, but because im me, my idea is my own, my fursona is part of me and even if some copies the idea, it will never be anything like me.
^_^ Even when your the same, your still different. Thats how i think.

Nothing is unique, and everything is unique. No idea will ever not be had by more than one person. But because they're had by different people, the take on them, the execution, the very thought processes leading up to them, is completely different. So... your friend shouldn't worry so much. A fursona is a skin over a personality, it's the person that makes it, not the fur color or the species or hybridization thereof.
the outside of the character can be duplicated for example there are a dozen dark furred kitsune's or fox morphs for those that don't recognize the term kitsune, I am one and about half of those have some power or another such as mine has the ability to control storms to a degree and walk the realms, the thing that is so hard or near impossible to duplicate that makes the character unique is how I believe the character should act. The uniqueness of the character is 'the character' of the persona.
I could make a cat that looks similar to hers but the biggest thing that would tell my fursona from hers would be the fact of in situation X what would you do vs what would I do. very few people will react the same Exact way that is where the unique part comes in.
and all the pics of her makes her seem like a very cuddle-able person that is fun to be around. but that is just my opinion.

It's not unusual that something is like another, like how store brand soda is like brand name cola, but the brand-name stuff always tastes better.
As far as what a character looks like, no, I'm not sure there's any such thing as unique. I've seen plenty of characters who look similar to some of mine. Some of them have been close enough that I had to click on the thumbnail to be sure. PussyCat's fur colors are so simple that it's pretty much inevitable that there are going to be a few characters around who look like her, even if the people who created them have never heard of her.
That said, I think what makes a character unique is their personality, and their history, even the person who created them. I think she's well developed enough as a character that there could never really be anyone like her. Even if you take two characters who are fairly similar in looks and personality, how their creators handled them, and the thoughts that went into them could never be exactly the same. Nor would anyone with any spark of genuine creativity wish to copy PussyCat entirely. Not because she's a bad character, far from it, but because anyone who is honest should wish to get their own vision out there instead. So I don't think that she, or you, have much to worry about there.

Honestly, I've never seen any other fursona's like Her's, She always stood out to me as HER fursona, not anyone elses.
There might be other white cats out there, but there's only one PC, and we still love her. ^_^
Look at how many horses look like me. Its a joke lol. Im veeeeery run of the mill
I think a fursona is defined by more than just the surface characteristics. Personality (and trust me, PC is full of personality) is part of the deal too!
Appearance is irrelevant for the fursona. You see tons of cat fursonas, but none of them are like PussyCat.
1. This Pussycat has o-kemono, a very skilled artist, drawing her.
2. Her childish imagination is something few characters retain without being immature.
3. She's a little plump and sports panties as a fashion icon, and doesn't care who notices.
See what I did there?

I have seen several characters that look enough like my bunny to be her twin sister, other than her fangs. While it may make Liane less unique in a way, it in no way changes her appeal to me, nor to her friends and fans so far as I can tell. It's the personality that makes us all unique. And no one can copy that.
Everybody is their own special snowflake until they decide they aren't anymore. Stories, be it written or through expression in a picture, are what makes characters more unique. Any white cat fursona looks the same as another until you read up on them... which of course applies to any simple-but-sweet characters.
This isn't groundbreaking information either though; so I am not to judge or say which decisions to make.
And this applies to everyone in the community, just keep aiming to have fun.

Personality is the key thing to me. While people may make characters that act similar in personality to yours, its still unique. Sir Kain has been a male black cat since the early 90's, his design not changing much besides a tweak to armor or sword designs. Yet he still seems to stand out and be unique among the many other black cat characters. Believe it has to do with the personality to help keep him unique and stand out in his own way among other similar characters.
In my case, the outfit has helped keep myself unique, even after at first being connected to Robin Hood(which had NOTHING to do with the character) The idea I run with him, and personality has helped as well.
I think one thing that makes her so unique, is your style that you draw her in... i have seen NO ONE with a style like yours! its one o my absolute faves... plus all the stories and thought you put into your work... all of that accounts to the personality that you give her, and to me... that does make her unique... there may be people that are inspired by her, and try to have a character like her, but all in all, there will always be just ONE PC <3
To me it's never just how a character looks, it's the personality that goes into it that makes the character unique.
With all of my traits and characteristics, both physical and mental, there better not be any other blonde femboy tree squirrel like me!! >__________>
my orignal fursona was created by Chucky... based only on a very few details... He nailed it too.. I should change my thumb,... but this one is well known too.
In a realm and time where "new" is usually recycled in a clever way, it's virtually impossible to have anything unique.
My own fursona is nothing but an upscale of an anime character.
What makes you unique is how you use your fursona. Some use it as an extension of themself, others, as a vent for emotions, others, as a mascot for their work.
Maybe suggest to your friend that she should look at how she uses her fursona and then how others are.

Well, I may have my two fursonas, even though they are more representing aspects of my personality, rather than "me as a different species". Rippah is sillier and is more likely to make referential jokes. A nice guy and very toony. Ziggy is a mischevious, naughty character with a deeper story than Rippah. Both are also blue!
The point is, if you are gonna have a *fursona*, it should connect with you. I have loads of characters, some more "original" than others. Even Rippah and Ziggy are ultimately just characters. Some fursonas are "me as a different species". Etc, etc. You are putting yourself into what you deem is your fursona. If you are tryin to be more unique, or conversely heavily based off someone else, you are missing the point.
In short a fursona is what you put into it, how you make it, what you do with it. Imitators may come up, coincidential similarities may happen. And if you try to change just for the sake of it, might as well make a character.

I guess being a dragon is bout as common as the hordes of foxes, wolves, felines, and other group genres out there.
But what makes me "unique" among the countless scaled ones out there? I don't know. Maybe the style or characterization the fursona possesses over every one elses.
I like PC for who she is and as many has mentioned those little "traits" that maker her.. her.
She thinks Brit T.V. is comedy regardless of what is being played. That gives her my thumbs up in any book.
Don't let her think that all those other white cats out there are blending her into the crowd. She is the ONLY Pussy Cat and no one in this world will ever change that.

To quote Doctor McCoy:
"In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And in all of the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all of that... and perhaps more, only one of each of us."

It was a very, very long time ago when I first saw you. It's kinda funny thinking about it - even back then, you probably had dozens of fans lusting after you. Now, most likely, you have hundreds. I'm sorta tickled that you fear no longer being original, because things work differently overall in my eyes - in my eyes, you're the original, panty-eating, gothic-colored, black-and-white feline. Others might share features, attributes, mannerisms, personality...bits and pieces that are similar to you, certainly.
But none of them are the lovable Pussy Cat. Y'know how a fantasy story has the usual tropes? There's the tough mercenary who has a soft side underneath his hardened exterior, the tomboy princess who wants to fight just as much as the men do, the peppy bard or thief who keeps the morale high...sure, there might be cats, cats with unusual features or strange habits. But it's not them we love. Those are the copycats (hah), the imitators...the generic folks that make up the huge portion of the internet. We might enjoy attributes, sure, but we love people. And we love you just the way you are.

every time I think my fursona ish getting too plain and common, I redesign her markings! It keeps her fresh-looking without having too much change.

I haven't felt that, actually, and here's why: people are going to be similar sometimes! Human beings can be similar to each other in many ways, so why shouldn't characters have similarities? Whether that's looks, behavior, interests, or attitude, uniqueness is in the combination, not in each of the various separate parts. There are other archers. There are other kitsunes. There are even other female characters without human-like head hair (though I don't see them often). But there's only one Nyomi. And there's only one PC.

I've seen other cream furred mice, even those with grey markings. I've seen mice in blue dresses but none fo them is me. I am the one and only, WHo i am is what I am. I am unique, even among the many MANY mice. a lot are close. felines, mice, canines, foxes, there are so many of them. but there is always one 'you'.
When I started into this fandom, I wanted to be unique. I was afraid of disappearing into the crowd. So I created a velociraptor-cheetah fursona,.. with no personality. It was definitely a conversation-starter, but it also got to be a bother, being asked every time I met someone "what's a raptorcat?" and struggling to make them picture that which couldn't be imagined. There's something to be said for a fursona that's easy to relate to. Is a black wolf unique? Hardly. There's probably 5000 others with my species and color, but this fursona represents my personality, and my dreams... which is what I end up talking about now.
I'm not sure Pussycat gets to claim uniqueness failure after the whole orange milkshake incident.
I've seen about a gazillion other cats around here (insert "swing a dead cat" joke here, followed by apologies for morbid humor), and I have yet to find one I'd confuse with her.

I have some experience with this and other related issues, and their causes as well.
There are 2 things at play. 1 is the limited amount of workable ideas and acceptible concepts, so the same things will pop up again and again. 2 is the fantasy forfilment aspect of furries. That's why their aren't many fat characters as everyone wants to be good looking, and the ones that are fat are often done so as part of a fetish, and thus unacceptible.
The end result is alot of sameness.

When I first had to create a fursona for myself I was 18, fresh out of high school (i.e. stupid and inexperienced)
I started out with what I figured to be a sort of default for furries: the fox. nondescript, just something I could easily describe and interact with, but I ran into something that I simply didn't like about a lot of furries I interacted with: they couldn't ever seem to settle on one fursona. I decided that summer that I wouldn't be like that.
After various interactions with different communities I eventually settled on liking the fennec desert fox and the arctic fox because of their unique adaptations to their environment which reflected myself in some ways because I've lived in both sorts of environments. So I put together the hybrid Arctic Fennec. Unique enough to stand out, but nothing eccentric that would seem completely out of left field.
The name I came up with has it's own history, but aJacks Varnish is completely my own creation from start to finish, and, as far as I know, the only Arctic Fennec hybrid out there, and I've stuck with him since the beginning.

I have never, in all my years in the fandom, met a generic fursona. It isn't animal type, color, height, weight, etc. that provides the uniqueness of a fursona. It's the human personality that is expressed by it. So, if no 2 humans are alike, no two fursonas can be alike.
