So far, this is the easiest and friendliest approach to cel shading I"ve developed. It monopolizes on already-defined areas, grouping, and rudimentary color adjustments to make this process as painless as possible.
Hopefully, some of you can save some time with this method. If anybody knows an easier way to go about it, please let me know.

Well I noticed that picture of the rhino in your submissions had some subtle use of multiple light sources with colors, and I had a bit of an issue with that with my last pokemon picture. Maybe that could be a topic to talk about?
Well, I don't know about multiple light sources in that pic. It's actually a matter of what are called "Counterlights." And yes, I'd be happy to discuss that subject soon.
So just wondering, so will the shading and highlight layers are different as in will the shading be the layer above the blue layer and then we highlight on the blue layer or the same layer we used for the shading
I...don't fully understand the question. First, this tutorial doesn't cover highlighting, that's a completely separate subject.

If you want to shade by using Approach One: Adding Shadow, then the base layer needs to be white, and you will put the shadows in by using blue. If you want to shade by using Approach Two: Adding Light, then the base layer needs to be blue, and you will then put white where the shadows aren't supposed to be.
Regardless of which layer is on top of which, the BASE layer is the one that needs to be changed to Multiply, and the grouped/top layer needs to stay set as Normal. I'm afraid I can't be any clearer than that.

I really wish I had found something like this when I first started coloring, it'd have saved me a year or two. =p

I tried to shade by adding shadows with your tutorial. But why did the shadow and the light got reversed?
I'm afraid I don't quite understand what your problem is. Did you set up the grouped shading layers like I explained before you started putting shadows down?
You mean the clipping mask? Yes, I did.
So, I've put the flat layer (the one that has the entire character shape) at the top and color it with dark blue. After that, I made another clipping mask and color it with white. That's all.

Right, you take the flat layer, put it on top of the whole colored character, change it to multiply.
If you want to perform the action of "Add shadow" the flat layer needs to be WHITE, and you use BLUE on the layer that you group on top of it.

Yeah I am honestly starting to work on just this kind of shading because the sort of style I have developed takes a while to do.
Interesting approach! I'd probably duplicate the layers and merge the copies rather than mess around with merging the original color layer and coping that, but then I usually end up with all my flats in a single layer anyway due to the tools I use.

Nice tut though the layer duplication and merging confuses me, do I need to do that for sure?
It's not necessarily required, but it all comes down to finding shortcuts to minimize the amount of work. If you find a method that works better and faster for you, then great!
