This is the lighting setup I was using for my recent rat pix.
As you can see, grids almost completely control any spilled light, focusing it almost entirely on the subject.
At the left and middle you can (barely) see 7" reflectors with 5 degree grids, and the dotted line in the upper right is a seam on my small stripbox with a 40 degree grid, which is pointing down at about 45 degrees.
Look at all the blackness!

Stopping motion isn't too hard at 1/160 second (the speed I usually use in the studio), and flash durations are VERY short at low power, so the strobe itself is keeping stuff crispy. Photography is nothing if not complicated. :)
