Taken from an as yet unwritten scene from my in-progress story Horizons, a grown up sole-survivor Justin is quite taken with the somewhat hypnotic drumming being performed by the young Vanguard warrior Black-Dune-Runner (BDR) late one night under the stars...
Although Vanguard aren't much in the way of musicians, they do use it during some of their important ceremonies that date back to more ancient times.

damie_m is the professional gentleman behind this rather stunning piece of artwork - I am extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to con him into producing another picture featuring my silly Vanguard critters... Damien, you are one amazing guy - thank you so much for this wonderfully intimate and detailed bit of eye-candy <3

You have great taste in most everything. Specifically artists and commissions as seen here. ^^
Not so much good taste on my part as the good fortune that fantastic people like Damien are willing to produce work for me like this.
But thank you, my friend.

Funny, you never really consider the practical applications of having four arms until you see them in action... you can play Double Dragon in two-player mode all by yourself, you can discipline a naughty puppy and pet a good kitty at simultaneously, you don't need anyone to lift up the couch for you while you vacuum under there, AND, apparently, you can play Rock Band solo. Or, in this case, focus on one set of instruments, and give a performance so rockin' that groupies and bitches come a-flockin'.
Grant you, BDR here only has one groupie/bitch to play to, but it seems to be working swimmingly.
Really just a fantastic and genuinely beautiful drawing. Even beyond the details, it's moody, atmospheric, evocative, and just .

Heh, you have actually hit on the very concept behind the picture... If you watch proper Japanese Taiko drummers, you will see that they get very, very into what they are doing. I can only imagine the hyped up state you would be in after a drumming session (exhaustion aside). BDR gets himself worked up into something of a frenzy, and a near hypnotized Justin makes for easy prey afterward. Not that Justin would take much convincing anyway, the lascivious minx.
Thank you so much for the wonderful comments - they are spot on to everything I was feeling with Damien sent this picture to me. He is... one fucking amazing artist.

I know what you mean, it has the soft, rich feeling almost like one of those classic paintings you see in galleries. Well, in feel if not in subject
Aye - they are not generally musical creatures by nature, however at certain ceremonies the drummers are brought out It is simply an aspect of their culture I have never written about before.
Aye, you're not wrong - they are one of man-kinds first musical instruments, and there is a very powerful, primal feel to a lot of tribal or primitive styled music played on them.
If you ever have the opportunity, check out "taiko drumming" - videos just do not do it justice. A live performance will send shivers down your spine, guaranteed. This is the kind of mental image I have for what the Vanguard have at their ceremonies.

Indeed.
Already have been way ahead of you. I've seen and heard taiko drumming quite a few times thanks to anime and games bringing it up. X3

Cool... hopefully you have heard a live performance, it will blow your shit away. Recorded versions just do not do it justice.
As in personally being there? I highly doubt I could attend anything like that around here. I'd have to go overseas for that. Or maybe hope the next anime convention actually tries doing a taiko drum event.
Ah, fair enough. There are a lot of Taiko groups around the world who aren't Japanese, but depending on where you are located they might be a little thin on the ground. Just if you do get the opportunity to see a group performing live, jump on it.
like the blue man group? they beat things in different rythmic patterns thatare interesting
just look on youtube they are a crazy bunch they don't speak but make music or rythm based off of other objects
I have... in a cavern. (It's an old local mine that's now used for performances.) My hubby likes Taiko; he's the one that found this particular performance.
It is, indeed, quite amazing to hear Taiko live.

Taiko drumming performed in a cavern? Oh my god, that would have made me cream myself something wicked. The acoustics... crikey. Your hubby has good taste, my friend.
Heh. Funny story that.
Back in May, we went to a handfasting for a gay couple that he knows ... and are now my friends, too. On the drive back home, I told him, "Sweetie, you really know how to find and befriend really Great People." He turned, looked at me, and said, "Yes. Yes. I. Do.," with a look on his face that said, "Get it through your thick head, numskull!"
I've since stopped doing the whole, "Waaaah! I'm such a horrible person! How can you stand to put up with me!" angst. Or tried to.

*laughs* He has style, and is telling you in his own special way to give YOURSELF some credit every now and then as well. Nice, I think I would like your partner.
You're not as horrible and unlikable as you seem to think you are
You're not as horrible and unlikable as you seem to think you are
Heh. I don't really think I'm horrible, except in rarer, darker moments.
However...
I am very self-correcting. I'm aware of my flaws, do not run from them, and try to overcome them. And (almost) everyone around me is oh so eager to use this as an invitation to play, "Let's Rub Your Nose in What's Wrong with You." (Sometimes, even the husband.)
This behavior is violating a boundary; I need to remember to say, "Stop. Yes, I want to work on this flaw of mine. Not. With. You. This is not the appropriate time, nor the proper place. And you don't have access rights to my brain." It's not easy to remember, even more difficult to remember in-the-moment.

Fully understand. Heat of the moment it is not easy to come up with that witty comment, pithy observation, well-worded argument or cooly considered response to an emotional attack. Only afterward do these things come. The considered response to an emotional situation is probably the most difficult of these.
Just don't got beating yourself up unnecessarily - there are plenty of other people who are happy enough to do that for you. But it sounds like you have this mostly under control (and if so, what is your secret?!)

Yet again my friend. The passion that your words have inspired is still truly amazing to me! wonderful and it speaks to well.
Heh - in this instance the words are actually yet to be written. I have some scenes in mind that are pretty much set in concrete but I just haven't gotten to them yet. This picture was actually intended to be a bit of an inspiration for me in order to hurry up and get to writing them out
But thank you for the kind comment!

Thank you - the artist did a fantastic job of rendering this in such a way that it has a wonderfully soft but intense feel to it
It is an awesome, moody and surreal dreamy piece of work. Very tasteful and I like that. :)
Heh, as much as I have a thing for the whole interspecies smut, there are some scenes that are just more powerful because of the honest emotions rather than the hot, sweaty bits. So tasteful, definitely - Damien excels at that, in a very powerful way. I appreciate the comment, Sir - thank you
I'm going to take it that by this time the two of them are fairly close...it does beg the question what's the antagonistic force that motivates change between them going to be. Any hints?
Actually the relationship between these two at this specific point in the future is... well, complicated. I would not say close exactly, but a certain key event has occurred that tempers BDR's antipathy a little. I shall avoid saying anything further so as not to spoil anything
So the Human is the Savage Beast Black-Dune-Runner is calming.....?
Heeee... so to speak. The title of the pic is not a pun exactly, it is more of a ironic play on words to what is happening in the picture. Eventually when I get to write out this scene properly it will make a bit more sense
What an awesome picture. The title makes me wonder which one is the beast.
hehehe... good catch on the title being deliberately ambiguous, mate! There are layers of complexity there that will only be clear once I actually get to writing out this scene in the novel
Spit-roast poor wee Justin there? He might get a little jealous of anyone else getting near the object of his desires...
That brute must have a really good control over his body, considering he have four arms that have to respond quick enough to not tangle into each other as he drums the night away. :D
Being a predator, the control over his body he has is nothing short of complete... just don't ask what he is using as a metronome
I dunno... the lecherous smile and the evil gleam on those four eyes kinda telegraph oh so noble intentions.
Not that the "prey" is unwilling...
Not that the "prey" is unwilling...
Heh... yes, the gleam in BDR's eye suggests his intentions are... rather sordid, if the truth be told. He gets a little amped up when he plays his drums
As for poor ol' Justin... he has no idea what is about to be visited on his nekkid and trembling body, but as you say he is not unwilling
