Because swords and sorcery is super retro.
Artdecade's got a(nother) rad comic going on his site, and he's put up the first 50 pages for free here. He's also running an art contest at the moment where folks can draw this merry trio in exchange for fabulous cash prizes, by which I mean a comped subscription to said site.
YOU GUYS SHOULD ALL ENTER TOO because I want to see more of these guys.

You and The Wielder are in competition for the Technical skills one I bet. SO GOOD.
Our styles are so different, it's kind of apples to oranges. Mostly, I just dig AD's work, and his comics, and wanted to do something with his big, cute, derfy bear <3
Sorry, I couldn't read your comment because of all the TEARS I was CRYING because your linework HURTS MY SOUL. I think your stuff is fantastic, so you can just shut it <3
Seriously, though, I'm glad you dig it! Means a lot ^_^

That's super extra adorable because I'm left imagining your giant burly lion-dude doing it <3
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSsssssssssssssss I have conjured something wonderful into existence.
By way of you drawing it.
Thank you for drawing it.

you may be somewhat disturbed to learn that your burly lion was the topic of girly micro-fanfics/masculinity slander right around last year : p http://www.furaffinity.net/view/420...../#cid:31517035
Both different, but both very beautiful in their own ways! Also, this comment chain below me is kind of cute in a weird way. Haha
Or above me, I should say, since FA's comment chains make so little sense. :|
Rite? It would probably not kill them to include a little dotted line tree diagram at the left to show where things branch. In some threads, it really does get impossible to follow along...
Haha, I think that's been half of the responses. Should... Should I be worried?
Rite?! They're so slick. I know it's kind of a trendy hipster thing to do, but I'd kind of wanted to make one for a while, too <3
haha, this is really quite wonderful~ and fitting in character personalities too ~
lovely

Thanks for, you know, drawing like a hundred page comic. In between all your other comics. And other drawings. All the time.
It was fun playing with them, and you know me -- doesn't take much arm-twisting to get me to draw big derfy bear types <3

So classy! How'd you think up "Arthur Decade"?
You mean that's not his name? I always thought Art was just the short form <3
Dayum, I love your painterly style. And the way you replicate old and antique textures and shit. Umm, yeah.
Nice work. :)
Nice work. :)
Thanks! It's hard to go wrong with burrs in loincloths for badass
Oh man. This is so awesome. I just love it; it totally plays into the quasi-vintage story book look that some of his work has. It's fantastic.
In fact, I'd love to see a run of these done, retro Story Book style. They could be colored and everything. It'd be beautiful.
There have been some inspiring attempts at fanart for this thing.
Maybe I should try to get some kind of anything done in two days' time just for the sake of it.

I like them! I like how much of the characters' personalities come through in their expressions <3
Thanks duder.
Too bad they can't be entered for only featuring one character at a time, though.
Just shrink them down and put them side-by-side-by-side as a triptych!
That's what I thought too but http://www.furaffinity.net/view/622.....5#cid:45209339
"i dunno, i feel it would be a bit naff on my part to allow a triptych of images, only because of how specific i was with others about it, i just don't think it'd be fair for me to do it :I"
Ah, well. D:

Tough luck, dude >_< But you still made some cool art! That's always a win <3
Aww, thank you.
Yes.-- And AD favourited them!
So there's some ego-boost/encouragement too!
I have gotten approval from you and ArtDecade, I feel all right about them now. <3 Y'ALL ARE SOME SWEET DUDES, THANKS.

Daaaaaamn so- okay no I won't say that too haha, but really this is quite excellent, love the facial expressions and the perspective here.
Oh and of course you would draw bulge *says in jest*

This is like Hemingway telling people to enter a NY Times caption contest :)
YOU WIN!
YOU WIN!
Pfff, whateeeeever!
Also, after hearing "Hemingway" and "caption contest," all I can think about is an advice dog-esque image macro of Hemingway with the text "GET DRUNK / HIT WOMEN."
He was not a very nice man.

Point taken. I guess I should have said "It's like Steinbeck inviting you to submit an addendum to Grapes of Wrath".
Or insert quite skilled person whose work is admirable :)

And I just read The Hardy Boys when I was younger when I should have been reading this!
Such fine physiques! And the traditional look is so realistic! Very cool.
A canopied, hammock-based litter? Wow, either Lael knows some good spells or he's just that crafty and they'd probably rather carry him than listen to him anyway.

Yeah, I think the plan is to rock him to sleep so he shuts the hell up <3
See, I wanted to submit something, but I don't have a pen for my tablet to draw it digitally. All I have now is a mechanical pencil, calligraphy pen, a small sketchbook, and a webcam to take a photo of it.
And now that I see this, combined with The Weilder's, and so many other people's submissions, IT'S LOOKING BLEAK. Because you're so damn good, JUST SO DAMN GOOD!

Well, there are going to be four winners chosen, so it's totally anyone's game! And besides, I'll bet you can get a lot of mileage out of those tools if you try <3
Worst thing that happens, you will have made some rad fan art for a rad comic, and made the author (who is a rad guy) happy. Sounds like a win?

You have an excellent point! So hell yeah, I should at least give it a shot! Thanks for the encouragement, I'll definitely try to invent something that pushes the limits of what I have for it.~
Win win situation for everyone! I love the mint green with the pale awning. Really simple shapes against the figures just make them all pop and unify in a gorgeous way!

Nice, dude! You totally should ^_^
And thanks! I had fun trying to keep it as simple as possible.

I dunno if I'll be able to make it on time. I've been busy this weekend with family (grandma is in emergency room). But I'll still do something regardless of the deadline!
And no problem man, I love everything you post, especially your tutorials!~

Sorry to hear about your grandma, dude >_< But that sounds like a rad plan. And thanks for the kind words!
So mod <3
There are a few deviations from their model here, but that was def. the chief inspiration <3

I blame poor planning and an inefficient education system!
Or maybe you just had other stuff going on <3

oftentimes your art supersedes stuff going on
I musta dun got no proper education!

I don't know how I missed the main guys' rockin' package the last time I saw this.....It's of note <3
You didn't win the contest due to lack of smut, IMO.
If Ithimar's erected bear wang was sticking out, it would have been the winner for sure.

I don't know anything about how the judging went down, but I'm glad you dig it, anyway ^_^
I'm just trying to assist you in winning any future furry related competition you enter.
This is so brandywine school, I love it. Although I don't think Pyle or Wyeth ever used that crazy shade of green!
Oh man, Brandywine school <3 And yes, this is actually a pretty direct homage to one of NC's endpaper illustrations for... Treasure Island? Some other pirate-y adventure book? I forget. But yes, definitely Wyeth inspired!
The one with the yellow sky? Ithink i know it. I see some of the conquistadors one where they're coming through the grass too. I forget the name of that one, but the forward marching figures feel very similar
Totally ^_^ I think the overall mood of the comic reminded me of those kind of pulpy adventure stories, and the Brandywine guys are never far from my mind anyway, so I went back through a bunch of their illustrations, found one with some big burly dudes hauling stuff through a jungle, and got the idea for this piece.
The monochrome-plus-splash-color style of a lot of those old end-paper illustrations really appeals to me. I'm sure this won't be the last time I go that route <3

I sincerely hope it isn't the last time :3 your art is so fun, and when the classics inspire you, you make wonders
