Despite their aspirations to express individuality through their headgear and clothing, the Warrior Giants have spent centuries surviving together in a hellish pocket dimension filled with other terrors locked away for all eternity, so they have incredible coordination and camaraderie. When they discovered the concept of music, they quickly picked up the habit of singing as they travel, and they love harmonizing together.
Despite it being a meme, many Moonbase Alpha covers of songs are unironically pleasant to listen to, and this cover of Mimiga Village from Cave Story is especially fun. It did not take long for me to imagine the Warrior Giants singing it themselves, so I opened up Maya and got to work. I decided early on to animate them in a low framerate, as I have never animated to audio in Maya before and I knew that I would end up doing things in probably the worst way so only having big distinct poses to work with helped a lot. Keeping with the beat was also difficult, as I had to fudge the speed of the song to get it to subdivide into 60fps nicely, but fortunately once I was ready to edit the rendered frames and the audio back together, I simply changed the length the video slightly so it matches the original tempo.
Setting it up in Unreal for rendering was pretty fun this time around, as I got to build the whole environment from scratch (with some assets, listed below), and I was even able to make it loop perfectly using a blueprint that I placed at the beginning and end that I could edit to keep the first and last frame identical. I don't have a lot of experience with making environments, especially ones suited to a specific camera angle like this, but hopefully it turned out nice!
