i thinking you're thinking of kitsune. tanooki resemble raccoon instead of foxes
I do also mean kitsune here (for the foxes), they're the ones that transform with a leaf on their head like tanuki do, they just BOTH do it.
Not all of them, most use the leaf to train their balance (very needed for when they transform)

They both transform by putting a leaf on their head. This is not flawed logic so I don't understand why anything needed to be said. 'Not all of them' is not the same as 'none of them'.
