Perhaps shock? Not really thinking straight, shaken from the events down below, worried about his daughter, got a friendly cat just all over him. Picks it up and continues instead of letting it get underfoot or accidentally kicked/stepped on? I'm only guessing, I don't actually know what his thought process was.
Miriam often allowed them inside the house through the window, as alluded in that very same page. He’s used to it, much like many of the cats are. Some are, ideally, from their neighbors too, so they’re used to being picked up.
