Nice surprise to see them show up. Personally, I prefer Fuli and Jasiri over Rani. Rani to me is kind of boring and the so called "Romance" feels extremely force without much thought. Then again, never watched the episodes with the character, but have heard negative things about her. Maybe if they developed her character more and better and make her a different species would have made it more interesting.

Thing is The Lion Guard had to rush the things to end it all in one season, so they had to close Scar’s arc, develop Kion’s paranoia about his own scar, the journey to the Tree of Life, the adventures in the Tree of Life and the Lion Guard coming back to the Pridelands leaving very little if any time at all for their romance
Keep in mind that The Lion Guard was targeted at a 2-7 Year Old Audience. I think this held Them back as far as any well developed romance plot goes.
