Roland 1st.
(422 - 479)
(1st ruler of Normania from 461 to 479)
We know very little about his childhood; all we know is that he was born in 422 in the eastern lands of the still-unified Flavian Empire, then called Rolandus Marcus Antonius Leonis.
In 438, at the age of 16, he joined the Flavian army as an infantry cavalryman, and went on to enjoy an outstanding military career. Not only was he an outstanding horseman, he was also a brilliant military tactician.
Then, in 445, Rolandus, aged just 23, was noticed by the emperor Claudius Antonin 5 (392 - 456) during a diplomatic trip to the region. The emperor asked him to accompany him on the journey, and Rolandus agreed.
He followed the emperor on this journey and on his return to the capital of the Flavian Empire, Augustodurum. A close friend of Emperor Claudius 5, he became a member of his imperial guard in 446, becoming the youngest member of the guard at the age of 24, a first for 200 years according to a historian of the time.
On April 17, 447, Rolandus saved Emperor Claudius 5 from an assassination attempt orchestrated by several provincial governors, including one of the most powerful and leader of the conspiracy, Lucius Crudelis, governor of the Septentrionalis province (North), who was captured on the spot and executed for high treason the following day.
To thank Rolandus for having saved his life and for his loyalty, Emperor Claudius 5 decided to ennoble him as an imperial knight and appoint him the new governor of Septentrionalis, adding the word "Cor" meaning "Heart" to Rolandus' first name to give the full name Rolandus Marcus Antonius Cor Leonis.
Rolandus took up his post and slowly adapted to the climate of this province, managing it efficiently, improving the imperial facilities and establishing relationships of trust with the powerful local families.
In 449, Rolandus met the woman who was to become his first wife, Tulla Numeria (430 - 467), who was a servant in his palace. Their relationship quickly developed into a friendship that would later blossom into love, and in 453 Rolandus and Tulla married and had their first child, the future Maximian Ist, on February 2, 454.
At the beginning of July 456, Emperor Claudius 5's health suddenly deteriorated, so Rolandus with his wife and child decided to travel to Augustodurum to see the emperor, arriving in the capital of the Flavian Empire after a 3-week journey at the beginning of August 456.
Emperor Claudius Antonin 5 finally succumbed to his illness on August 29, 456, at the age of 64. After the funeral, the emperor's two sons quarreled violently over their father's imperial throne, but thanks to the intervention of Rolandus, several imperial advisors and Claudius 5's daughter Julia Octavia (432 - 506), an agreement was reached and the Flavian Empire was divided in two.
It was thus that Marcus Antonin 3 (420 - 461) became Emperor of the Western Flavian Empire and his younger brother Ludovis Petrus I (426 - 494) became Emperor of the Eastern Flavian Empire. What no one suspected at the time was that this decision would have consequences 5 years later.
Rolandus and his family returned to their province of Septentrionalis, but as he left Augustodurum, he couldn't help but be concerned. Marcus 3 was a tyrannical and violent ruler, but he also went to war and plunged his Empire into troubled times, so much so that in March 459, several provinces rose up against the authoritarianism of Emperor Marcus 3 and threatened to secede.
Rolandus' brother Marcus 3 arrested Julia Octavia and sentenced her to death on December 14, 459...
