Lumi could tell that their doggy was in their element for once. That Arcanine-Rapidash’s thick pink-and-white pelt wasn’t suited to their normal hot, muggy climate. Up here, where Lumi lived, the dry chill was far cosier.
If anything, Lumi, with their cold blood and their smooth pink-scaled flesh, would have been better suited down there. They were layered up with thick-furred boots and an equally thick coat, trying their best to handle the evening chill, and their tail had looped itself around Milkshake’s body. Not as a leash, but just as an extra bit of padding. Luckily the air was still, and it wasn’t snowing at this particular moment. So they could bear the elements for their beloved visitor.
Just holding Milkshake’s paw did wonders, though. That fire-typing gave the Arcadash the comforting warmth of a hot water bottle, and Lumi could feel the heat radiating up their arm into their torso.
It was approaching 1:30 in the morning, but the thick layer of bright white snow along the walkways and the grass was enough to catch what little moonlight and starlight there was and brighten the surroundings. Neither of the couple even needed their phones… they’d left them at home, in fact.
The snow had been falling in a gentle stream all day long, and Lumi and Milkshake had spent the day indoors, in constant close proximity, the way they were at this moment too. It was Milkshake’s suggestion that they step outside once the snow abated… and it just so happened that meant their wander through the suburban snow was a late-night one.
Milkshake was babbling away with excitement, and Lumi was having a little trouble keeping up with it. For one thing, they were a little tired, not being used to staying up quite so late, plus they were The canine’s face was just so pretty when their eyes lit up like that and the words came out in eager streams. It was fine. Lumi wasn’t going to be graded on what they said.
And they’d been just as rambly earlier; it was an important part of the catch-up, a way to work through the excitement of a long-distance love affair suddenly becoming up close for a brief, wonderful moment of time.
When the stream of words finally stopped, Lumi just gave Milkshake a gentle squeeze - their arms around Milkshake’s left arm, their tail curling more and more around Milkshake’s body hanging in loose drapes like a fashionable scarf. (Mostly so Lumi could steal some of their partner’s precious warmth.)
Milkshake’s wagging tail began to bat against Lumi’s thigh and butt, and the dragon chuffed with delight.
The 3 a.m. stillness surrounded them. This particular stretch of suburbia was decently quiet during the day anyway, but now, you could practically hear your own heartbeat as clearly as you could see your foggy breath.
After Milkshake’s long ramble, they’d been silent for the better part of a half hour. Not that there was nothing left to talk about… but what could possibly be more important than taking in the beautiful darkness, the delightful quiet?
It was the Arcadash who broke the silence, with a long, steam-spewing yawn.
“Mm? Getting sleepy?” Lumi asked, giving their arm a tight hug with their tail.
“No,” Milkshake said with a sigh. “Though I wouldn’t mind sitting down somewhere…”
Lumi looked up and down the streets, at the expanses of ice and snow.
“I think there’s a bench somewhere… though it’s probably buried by this point, heh.”
“I was actually thinking of lying down in the snow.”
“Wh-where?” Lumi sputtered and laughed, a little incredulous. “We’re not gonna lie down on someone’s lawn… or in the snow! I’ll freeze!”
“Not if I can help it, sweetpea,” Milkshake responded with a chuckle, wrapping their big arms around Lumi and tugging them around them into a very warm embrace. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep you from catching cold.”
“Good… I catch ‘em all the time this time of year,” Lumi murmured. “But… we aren’t gonna trespass on someone else’s property!”
“They won’t know,” Milkshake said, giving Lumi a smooch on the neck.
“Some of ‘em might have alarms,” Lumi said. “Some of my neighbours are a bit… ehhh…”
“Awrrr… yeah, I get you. Is there a place a bit further up we can go to? A park or some kinda green space?”
“Mmm… yes, actually. I think I might have an idea…”
Silence settled over them again as they walked, their pawfalls creating a slightly off-rhythm four-count of crunching compacting snow.
“Shoulda brought my phone,” Lumi muttered. “I get all turned around at the best of times…”
“Don’t worry about it,” Milkshake said, giving Lumi a kiss on the top of their be-hatted head. “I’m just happy spending the time with you.”
“Yeah, but… I don’t wanna waste it!”
“Don’t worry, you won’t!” Milkshake replied.
It didn’t take too much longer for them to find a decent stretch of white that wasn’t directly in front of a house - it was a ridged snowdrift, probably pushed off to the side of the road by a snowplough. Milkshake was wagging even more frantically now, and as soon as he spotted the patch, they took off into a sprint towards it.
Lumi wasn’t quite so prepared, though. Their tail was still draped around Milkshake, and they weren’t ready for their puppy to take off into a run. And they were strong, their coils were bulky, but Milkshake was just as strong.
“WHOA!” Lumi yelped as they were jerked rather violently behind Milkshake, their stumbling feet digging into the snow and kicking up sprays of it as they tried to keep up.
It was worse when they got onto the swept road, which was black, chilly… and slippery.
One of Lumi’s feet went out from beneath them and they spun through the air, landing on their back with a grunt before they skidded along. It was only then that they felt their tail jerk to a stop.
“Oh no! Lumi!”
Lumi didn’t have any time to re-orient their spinning head before they felt the warm presence of Milkshake’s pink-furred body over them. Warm paws pressed into Lumi’s cheeks, lifting their head up to look into those big, worried eyes.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt? Oh, gosh, your tail, I’m so sorry!”
Milkshake sniffled, and was beginning to babble again.
“I’m fffine,” Lumi slurred, “I didn’t bump my head, just got a bit dizzy being pulled around by you...”
“Are you sure?” Milkshake said. “Are you sure? Do we need to go to the hospital? What if-”
Lumi managed to get themself together just enough to give Milkshake a kiss on the snout - it was a little off centre, and they ended up kissing Milkshake’s left nostril rather than the centre.
“Arrrfh…” Milkshake’s ears were downturned and he began to sniffle again. “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry…”
“I’m fine, honey,” Lumi repeated. “Just need to lie down a bit… let’s get to the snowdrift.”
“Okay, okay, yes,” Milkshake said. They didn’t wait or ask for permission before lifting Lumi up over their head in a fireman's carry.
Lumi knew better than to try and resist when this happened… better to just let their big puppy have their way.
Milkshake laid Lumi on the snow delicately, like they were made of porcelain.
The snow felt predictably chilly beneath Lumi’s body, but it was easier to handle when Milkshake’s space-heater warmth settled in next to them.
Lumi could hear Milkshake sniffling, and took hold of their hand, interweaving their fingers in a loving lattice.
“It’s all right, sweetpea,” they said, rubbing Milkshake’s palm with their thumb. “You didn’t do anything bad.”
“I know, it’s just… I don’t want anything bad to happen while we’re together, it’s just gonna be such a short amount of time and I want all of it to be great, and…”
They were starting to whimper and cry. Lumi turned towards them and wrapped them in a big, four armed, full-tailed, heat-siphoning hug.
“It’s okay, let it out,” Lumi said. “Cry it all out… now’s a good place to do it. I mean, look at the view above us!”
“Mm?” Milkshake sniffled and looked up at their partner’s request. “...Wow.”
Above them, a canopy of deep dark blue was peppered with beautiful pinpricks of light. The myriad stars, unfathomably massive, yet distant pinpricks from this distance, twinkled gently, scattered in so many different directions. They dared the couple to stare at them, to seek out the hidden shapes and messages within them. To take in the sights for as long as they could, before the sun rose and occluded them again.
Another silence settled over them, save for the odd, soft little sniffle from the canine. That, eventually, settled.
The moment was simply too special, too beautiful, to spoil with words. Any worries about making the most of their time together had dissipated. Just the simple pleasure of gazing into the beautiful beyond, together, in each other’s orbit for this brief period of total bliss.
“We’re doing this tomorrow night,” Milkshake said eventually, with a very affirmative tone.
“You got it…” Lumi said.
They didn’t need to say ‘I love you’ to each other. Staring at the stars together said that, and more.
I wanted something personal with my partner of (almost) three years, DrakeArcanine . I love them more than I could think of the words to say. I'm always here for you, darling.
