Yohan was set to follow in his mother's hoofsteps and go into medical school but when a new mare joined the herd the home required some expansion and since none in the herd was skilled in carpentry they had to hire someone for the job. Yohan had little to do around that time so when the work started he would often just watch and gradually become interested enough to ask questions and eventually even get to help out with some of the more simple tasks and he enjoyed every minute of it, so much so that he decided to become a carpenter. Much to his surprise he had his parent's blessing and they even helped him find some one to learn the trade form, which happened to be the same human who they hired for the job. Despite a bit of a rough start with the change in routine Yohan soon settled in and found that he seemed to have some talent for the work as he quickly picked up new skills, though it helped that Hugo was a good teacher and he enjoyed having an apprentice to pass the craft along to in this modern technological age.

But as time passed Yohan learned he actually had some other feelings towards Hugo, but since he was afraid to come out to him he kept it to himself for a long time before he finally worked up the nerve to bring it up. Turns out that Hugo had some idea at least of Yohan's feelings towards him for some time now. However this would change things as the law still frowned upon master and apprentice relationships so now that this was out in the open Hugo could no longer teach him. Though he hadn't rejected Yohan Hugo told him that has was concerned that he might have imprinted on him, as Dravers sometimes do with humans in particular or close friends so he might be confusing his feelings. Though if they were his true feelings he could do better than this old man... Hugo suggested that maybe Yohan just needed to see some more of the world and meet some new people and experience some new things first, so he offered a suggestion that Yohan would continue his apprenticeship with the foxtaur clans in Greater North America for a while, and if he still felt the same afterwards he might consider taking their relationship further.

Though he was scared about traveling halfway across the world on his own, he was intrigued to find out what these foxtaurs might be able to teach him so he accepted the challenge. And though his parents initially objected they relented and let him do this with their blessing, although they didn't know the true reasons for this sudden adventure at the time. Before long the day finally arrived and Yohan said his goodbyes to his parents and Hugo, promising to call or write as often as possible. The next coouple of years certainly were an experience and a culture shock as he tried his best to fit in with the foxtaurs and their culture and traditions, he certainly wasn't prepared for the obligation when the foxtaur council decided he should be eligable as a male even though he is not a fox.
