I always enjoy posing the headstock of whatever guitar my friend Auri brings to the band house on a given Saturday night in front of his VOX AC-30 amplifier. VOX amps not only sound great, but they're also pretty and distinctive. They make a very nice backdrop for a close headstock photo, which as all I can manage among the clutter at the band house.
Here's his nice old Gibson Les Paul Standard. We seldom see this one; it's worth a lot of money and Auri doesn't bring it out often. It sounds fantastic though, and he plays it very well. I've had the chance to play it myself, and it's very nice.
It's heavy, however. Les Pauls are always heavy for me. I love the fat Les Paul neck, but they're too heavy. I like the look of the Gibson SG, they sound awesome (ask Robbie Krieger) and they're nice and light, but the necks are too thin.
That's why the Firebird is my favourite solidbody Gibson. They combine the best physical qualities of them all; they have a nice fat neck on a light body, they sound awesome (ask Johnny Winter), they have those fantastic mini-humbucker pickups, and I love the look of them.
