The clade of avians has a difficult evolutionary history to track, given the limited amount of dry land and intense development over the past thousand years. The current theory is that a flying sophont ancestor originated on the planet’s largest landmass, an Australia-sized continent, and radiated outwards to evolve into the 5 extant species of avians.

any reason why some seemingly-nice islands were skipped over for habitation? was it just chance migration, or did the ancient avians find them unsuitable?
Those islands have no strong geological evidence of habitation in prehistory. It may be because they were uninhabited, it may be because evidence of habitation didn't preserve well, it may be because a now extinct pre-sapient ancestor lived there.
