This is an idea that I've had for a while. I wanted to draw a pair of characters who appeared on the surface completely different but who are a couple, who would look like they shouldn't get along but once you get to know the two, you couldn't imagine them being apart, that they're a cute couple together and get along so well with each other. Two characters of different species and builds. I knew I wanted one of the pair to be a predator and the other to be a smaller prey species of that predator, but with their builds switched from what might be expected.
I decided to settle on a coyote for one of the two. I couldn't decide on using a fox or a wolf but I felt like a coyote to me seems like a halfway between a fox and a wolf (I know that coyotes are not only far more closely related to wolves but are so closely related that they can interbreed). I always wanted to create a coyote character and wanted to figure out a way to use a coyote.
Then I needed a species for the second character. I looked at species that coyotes hunted and settled on jackrabbits, specifically a black tailed jackrabbit (I may have been influenced by Archie Sonic).
As I wanted the two to appear switched from what might be expected, I made the coyote the smaller of the two and the jackrabbit the taller of the two. Then I took it further. The jackrabbit is more muscular, the coyote more curvy. I wanted to give the coyote a gothic look, so I gave the jackrabbit a sporty look. By making the coyote gothic that would hint at an interest in fantasy, so I decided to give a hint that the jackrabbit is into science fiction, so that's why I put a Starfleet insignia on her sports bra.
While drawing the jackrabbit I wasn't too sure what to do with her arms and I felt inspired to give her four arms. I knew I had to give the coyote something weird, but I had already planned her out and I didn't want to change her too much, so I went back to a rough drawing I did of a kitsune with tail maws so I gave the coyote a tail maw. I did think about giving her more tail maws but it just ended up crowding the image and trying to sweeze in more tails on the page just made it look too awkward, so I settled on the one tail maw. I then wanted to give that tail maw a sense of a unique personaliy, so that's why the tail maw has a spiked collar and bandana (I was thinking "rock rebel").
I do have ideas on how to further develop the two characters, including their histories and their personalities, but I haven't settled on anything yet. Maybe when I do I'll draw each character separately.
If I've drawn this right, the two should look cute together.
There's a few firsts in this drawing. The first time I've tried to draw a jackrabbit character, the first time I've drawn a character with four arms, the first time I've drawn characters holding hands.
This is the second drawing I've done with a 4B pencil, that's why the lines look darker than my other drawings. I did try with a 2B pencil but I wanted darker lines to make the image clearer. While drawing I did a mistake that had to be erased but then ended up with a large smudge that I couldn't get rid of. It didn't affect either of the two characters, it was a smudge that was close to the coyote's mouth (I guess it may have made her look like she's smoking). That's when I decided to use a kneaded eraser for the first time. The only way I could fully erase the smudge was digitally.

This is a lovely pair! I like the choice you went for a predator-prey combination, turning natural enemies into wholesome lovers. It's nice to read your entire thought process behind them.
Have you ever considered colouring your drawings? There are some digital tools that could help you with that, and it can give your drawings that extra bit to come alive.

Wholesome was definitely what I was trying to go for.
I have thought many times about colouring my drawings digitally, but I don't even know where to begin.

I can recommend Krita. It has a large range of tools, the program feels intuitive, and it's free and open source. You could give it a try
