The PAcket Hacking Village (which specializes in networking, capturing data packets, and analyzing them) offers displays known as the "Wall of Sheep" and "Field of Sheep."
These reveal anyone connecting to unencrypted, public, or otherwise unsecure wifi networks and attempting to access personal accounts. Through this, the operators can see your account credentials.
The "Field of Sheep" tracks those who keep their wifi connections on, which will have their phones attempt to connect to their home networks. When they fail, they continue to transmit and attempt to connect. An attacker could then spoof your home network"s wifi, thus imitating your home network and allowing them to scan information you transmit to something you think is secure. It could also track your physical location in the room!
So, advice? Connect to only secure networks, use VPNs, and turn your wifi connection off when you leave your house.
