I'm understanding in this universe, furries can actually physically become anthropomorphic by engaging sexually with each other. So there's anthros just walking around in the city and it just means they're furries and have had sex, like literally any adult.
Now, they've been roommates and friends for god-knows-how-long and he just seems human this whole time, she must have assumed like anyone else that if he was a furry at this point he'd look anthro already. Then outta nowhere she's finding out a side of him that he never shared with her before despite being friends and roommates for a long time. Makes sense she'd freak out about him not being honest to her this whole time.

Maybe he wasnt ready to accept it himself let alone to anyone else, he was quite worried when the transformation started. That and he insisted the band is "furry- adjacent"
