This is something all too familiar, having been raised in Arizona. I watched several friends try to make it over in California until they were overwhelmed by debit, discouragement due to the competitive job market, or just missing home. It is unfortunate, but these companies can just expect that candidates live local. Although they may not publicize a bias for proximity, it is not uncommon for recruiters to reject an application entirely based on address. While this is an illegal practice for companies in some cases, it still happens.
Candidates have been getting around this for ages by either declaring their intent to move into the area or by using the address of a family member/friend that lives close enough by. Be prepared to problem solve if they ask for an in-person interview as they are not going to pay for your plane ticket when they learn you live far away!
The need to move has been lessening recently due to remote work, a direct by-product of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations may give preferences for the timezone that you live in or proximity to a major airport, but the need to relocate has been reduced. Also, some technical or specialty jobs may include relocation bonuses as part of the offer letter. This is usually stated in the job posting, but you can clarify this with your recruiter.

I remember moving to Portland years ago and saying I was intending to move there in a couple weeks but still getting turned down in phone screens because they wanted to fill the job sooner than that. Feels like less of an issue now with most of my interviews being done over the phone or Zoom even on local jobs.
This is changing. Most of the interviews I have heard of these days are being done remotely. There are still some high level/technical jobs that they would fly a candidate in for.
Also, more companies are closing their offices. They do not have as much space these days to conduct in-person interviews.
