I randomly got the idea to take one (and later, some) of my characters and attempt tarot-card inspired drawings of them.
This is based (roughly) off of The Devil card from the Thoth tarot deck. And yes, it does have large balls like in this picture. Look it up - I'm not joking! Let's unpack this card:
This drawing features Norikaru, a bat who is set upon the world by the Keothal, powerful god-like entities who control all of reality. Norikaru specializes in punishing those who display a sense of extreme, perhaps even dangerous, arrogance. He is the punisher of the hubris of mortals.
In both of his hands are small little orbs, which both contain a soul within them. His hands are also positioned with one pointing up, and the other pointing down - as above, so below.
The shape behind him is modeled after the Tree of Life from The Devil Thoth deck card; here, it's more of a Tree of Souls. Various vine-like branches stretch fourth from the tree, each having a sack attached to it, with each sack containing a wealth of soul-orbs. One sack features a black moon - the black moon of Geburah, judgment and limitation. Another sack features a silver moon, standing in for Chesed, kindnes or love. The implication here being that those souls trapped in Geburah face some sort of judgment; while the ones trapped in the sack of Chesed may face some potential compassion or mercy from this fate.
On the Tree of Souls is a yellow-and red eye surrounded by purple triangles. This is the Eye of Ruyashi, the Keothal of Souls. Some of these triangles come to life and leap off the tree, forming a tangling network of spiritual bonds that shackle Norikaru's neck, wrists, and ankles. He is a powerful entity, but even he is restricted by the power of divinity. The halo encircling the Tree of Souls is the presence and portal of the Keothal, who help Ruyashi in keeping an eye on Norkiaru.
We get a glimpse into two sacks, coming up front and center (and appearing very intentionally suggestive). One sack is bound with a seal for "Men", the other for "Woman". A perplexing spiral of soul orbs lies within each.
Rising up in between the sacks is a sacred staff of divinity, headed by an Eye of Ruyashi. On one end, is a vine with grapes, and on the other, a flaming end. This is taken from the Rider Waite Smith deck, where in The Devil card the male devil has a flame tail, and the female devil has a tail ended in a grapevine. Norikaru's legs help hold the staff in place, as do the sacks. Thus Norikaru himself, and the fruits of his labor going into the sacks, allowing them to be engorged to their size, helps to keep the staff in place.
