Alex was sitting in his armchair reading a joke book he just bought from a yard sale. He flipped through the pages as he read the jokes. One joke was, "Why should you never trust stairs? Because they are always up to something!" Alex read another good joke. "Why is Peter Pan always flying? Because he Neverlands!" Alex decided to read one last joke before setting the book down. "What's a pirate's favorite letter? You probably think its 'R' but it would be the 'C'!" Alex laughed at the jokes. "Boy, that is one good jokebook!" He rose from the chair but instead of being in his living room, he found himself inside of the front room of the Littlest Pet Shop! He still had the joke book in his hand. He felt himself getting shorter. Grey fur covered his face and body. A white streak went down his back. A skunk tail grew next. His eyelashes lengthened and he transitioned into a she. Her eyes became a delicate shade of pink. "I did not see that coming! Alex said to herself. Alex heard someone say, "No, no, no, no, no! I couldn't have just misplaced it! My friends will be so disappointed in me if I do my comedy routine that I promised them!" Alex walked into the next room and found the owner of the voice. It was Pepper Clark! She was pacing back and forth in a state of anxiety. "Hello, I'm Alex!" She said to catch Pepper's attention. "What's wrong?"
Pepper spun around to see Alex. "Woah! Another skunk like me! How did you get here?"
"Long story." Alex replied. "What exactly are you missing?"
Pepper Clark sighed. "My joke book! I left it on the shelf but now it's gone! I was planning on doing a stand-up comedy routine but now that the book is gone I have nothing to tell. I can't even remember all the jokes!"
Alex told Pepper, "Wait right there for a moment." She rushed into the front room, grabbed the jokebook, and returned to Pepper. "Is this the jokebook you are talking about?"
Pepper looked at the front cover. "Nope." she shook her head. "Never seen it before. What kind of jokes are in that one?"
"Let me tell you one." Alex said as she opened the book and read one of jokes out loud. "You know why you never see elephants hiding up in trees? Because they are really good at it!"
Pepper laughed, "That's a good one, can you tell me another, please?"
Alex read a second joke, "I told my friend ten jokes to make him laugh. Sadly, no pun in ten did!"
Pepper laughed again. "Cool jokebook! Where did you get it?"
"At a yard sale." Alex replied.
"Hmm, I have an idea." Pepper said. "Since my jokebook is nowhere in plain sight and we are nearly out of time, we'll use your jokebook! Would you like to join me for my comedy routine?"
"Sure!" Alex accepted the offer.
Five minutes later, the resident pets of the Littlest Pet Shop all sat side by side facing Pepper Clark and her new friend Alex.
"Hello, everybody!" Pepper announced. "Joining me today is my newest friend, Alex!" the pets applauded. "Say, Alex, can a kangaroo jump higher than the Empire State Building?"
"Of course, the Empire State Building can't jump!" Alex said. The pets laughed. "Pepper, what did the duck say when it bought some lipstick?"
Pepper replied, "Put it on my bill!" the audience chuckled.
Alex said, "A horse walks into a bar. The bartender says "Hey!" The horse says "Sure!"
Pepper said, "Yes, that how it happened, folks!" the pets snickered.
Alex asked Pepper, "What do dentists call their x-rays?"
Pepper responded, "They call them tooth pics!" Pepper next said, "Say, Alex, did you hear about the first restaurant that opened on the moon? It had great food but no atmosphere!"
All the pets applauded. Zoey cheered. Blythe Baxter walked into the room, impressed with the jokes. "Shall we give them one last joke?" Alex asked.
"Let's be generous and give them two before we call it a day!" Pepper said. "Do you want to hear a construction joke?"
Alex shrugged, "Sorry, I'm still working on it!" the pets and Blythe laughed.
"What kind of shorts do clouds wear?" Alex asked.
"Thunderpants!" Pepper laughed. The pets and Blythe cheered. "Alright, folks, that wraps it up!" Alex and Pepper took a bow." Ten minutes later the pets and Blythe surrounded the two skunks. "Thanks for joining the show, everyone, Alex was a real lifesaver! I lost my old jokebook and so I had to borrow Alex's jokebook. The show was a smashing success!"
"I found your jokebook, Pepper." Blythe said, "It was under your bed."
Pepper blushed. "Oops!"
Alex said, "That's alright, it turned out alright in the end."
"And the jokes weren't rude this time." Penny Ling said.
"Yeah." Pepper said. "Why don't we head over to the ice cream shop as a reward for a great show?" Pepper asked.
"Certainly!" Alex smiled. The pets and Blythe headed over to the nearest ice cream parlor for a sweet treat.
