The world in general seems quite a mess, even with the fancy tech they have. Not that Deathe's efforts have exactly improved its condition all that much...

It is my belief that most (not all) villains are a product as much of the things they learned as the decisions they made. What makes an interesting villain is a villain in which you can see pieces of yourself, however fleeting. We've all had moments in our lives where we wanted to do, or actually did bad things because overwhelming circumstances led us to dark places. The true villain is the character who doesn't (or can't) come back.
