Of the many localities of Lonestar and the Lonestar wasteland are skirmishers. Mean orange foxes that are hyperactive and will chew on almost anything. Long ago someone figured out you could scare them off using a pinecone and shiny objects as eyes, because when they tried to bite down into the cones they got a prickled mouth and would run off afraid as if they had attacked some invincible monster creature. That eventually became an actual art and local thing, making so called "pine critters".

These are based on a real thing! käpylehmä, although locally we have also made pinecone toys as we live in the Texas piney woods. I don't ever recall ours having a name though.
