You step through the portal and find the silver dragon leaned over the edge of artificially lit glass, his wings folded over himself like a cloak. He beckons at you, inviting you to his promised history lesson. You walk towards him, and the bright green light gives way to a dazzling array of lights and twinkles below. The dragon's aura emanates magic, partially physically manifested by a faint blue light you could see under his cloaked wings, but were currently overwhelmed by the green light of the building you were standing on. He turns to you and begins his tale.
Earth is the cradle of life in the universe. There was a long period of time where this fact was debated, but that was before magic evolved within the souls of most living beings, pushed to prominance by the great machine rebellions which organic life only barely survived with the leadership of powerful mages. After all, without the expression of the power innate in our souls, we are but weak bags of meat and usually water.
Now, any two-bit businessman off the street who's dabbled in time magic can at least play back history to help prove the truth. More powerful historians have long traced the oldest life to humanity on the planet Earth.
Those ancient humans yearned to seek out other life in the universe, and for many millions of years they found none. They were the first, when the universe was but in its nascent phase.
They built faster and faster FTL drives, but eventually the limits of science and technology were beginning to hold them back. Luckily, the empty worlds they traversed and left their microscopic bits of life on began to evolve themselves. Fast forward a few more million years and the galaxies were seeded with life that humanity itself dispersed throughout the stars.
There was other life which evolved beyond the limited reach of humanity, of course, but by the beginning of the machine rebellion, most known life had the same basic blueprint as humans did: generally anthropomorphic vertebrates with four limbs with occasionally a tail which ancient precursors to humans long ago had as well.
You're here to see Earth, aren't you? I am a time mage of the highest caliber, and so I have physically brought you to the past. The laws of time do not allow us to interfere with the past, unless time itself had planned such interference, or a lack of observers allow us to bend the progression of the central timeline. A living soul witnessing an event makes it a fixed point in time in their personal timeline. You can sit here with me and watch this bygone city live. Do not attempt to descend to the city below and announce your presence. Time itself will remove you from the main temporal phase, and I will have to pull you back. And I do not like people who openly try to defy the laws of time. Not because I'm concerned with the fabric of reality mind you, that keeps itself safe just fine, but mainly because of the extra work.
If you do accidentally cause a disturbance, be glad some of the insane human theories of time travel are not true. There was one ridiculous theory that some monsters would appear and destroy all of history, and a similar theory where if you were knocked out of the main temporal phase for too long that floating monsters would come devour you.
Anyway, this city is called Dallas. It is one of the major cities on the North American continent back when humanity was approaching technological singularity. This was a critical point for most life in the universe as well, for if humanity destroyed itself with the powerful weapons they had developed, the evolution of life elsewhere would have been delayed by billions of years. Some extremists believe this outcome would have been better, for the universe would have become far more biodiverse. But they discount the souls of all life that was born by human provenance, including ours.
Why do I place such an emphasis on a soul, you ask? Humans of the past never knew whether or not they had one. With magic, we have empirical proof. If you were grievously wounded and died, I could use my time magic to reverse the damage to your body. Your flesh would be perfectly as it was. But you would still be dead. Your autonomous systems would still work, your lungs would breathe but you would be gone. I can only heal you before your soul leaves your body, the time of permanent death.
My eyes? What of them? They seem filled with sadness now? That is a story for another time.
For now, enjoy the bustling life in this city. There are many other human cities like it, many even glizier and attractive, but this one is one of my favorites. I feel a connection here, sitting upon this skyscraper lit by primitive technology. Perhaps, if reincarnation is true, I may have lived one of my past lives here. I can sometimes imagine myself as a human down there in the streets staring up at the night sky past the glowering lights of the buildings and wondering what else is out there. And my poor previous life would have never known the answer was none...yet.
A very nice art piece dedicated to my second home, Dallas. I may have to leave soon, and wanted to have art to mark the 4 years I've loved living here. Thanks to buckovskiart for the awesome commission!
