It is once again World-Building Wednesday, my dudes.
In which I decided to just chill, play with shapes a bit, and finally design a generic Lightbearer Dominion city scene.
I was originally considering using this as a background for another piece, but decided it wasn't suitable for that purpose. However, it IS a really nice-looking (if not a bit generic) looking sci-fi cityscape, and I will likely use (and abuse) it as a background element in the future.

This is what I always imagined the average Lighbearer Dominion urban center to look like--a strange industrial uniformity yet still chaotic and random as the city is built up over the years. I also wanted the visual style to contrast with that of Jeroban/Cygnian architecture, which favors earthy tones, softer edges, and whose skyscrapers are vaguely reminiscent of the mesas and plateaus of their desert homeworld. In contrast, Dominion architecture features the same industrial metallic look, colors, and feel of their starcruisers, with more sharp edges and overlapping construction elements.
At some point in the future I would also like to mess with blending Dominion futuristic construction aesthetics with the more traditional architectural styles of their various member worlds, as the Dominion is prone to building up cities over years and centuries and it would be very in-character to have a row of traditional Zerdan townhouses or a Keahi fortress or ancient Luciferian temple incorporated into a modern Dominion tower.

Nice. Also, if you turn it sideways, you could use it for a massive ship nose. Not that large structures couldn't be ships. The 80s Volron, and Krull both had castle spaceships. Stargate had pyramid spaceships. Borderlands had mining ships turned into towns. But, even if a structure isn't a ship, that's not saying that someone couldn't build a ship with similar silhouette to said structure.
Thanks! One thing that I've decided is canon for Starfarers in general, regardless of faction, is a tendency to convert some of their starcruisers into cities when colonizing new worlds--if a cruiser has had a rough voyage, it may be able to take on a second life as a prebuilt city. Use the engines as generators, and since the cruisers are already practically small self-contained cities in their own right, you have a ready-made colony. At some point I really should draw a city built up around a grounded cruiser, it would be a very interesting visual, I have a couple different ideas for how that could look based on said city's location and history.
Of course, if a vessel is too badly damaged to just be used as a starter city outright, it can still be broken down for materials to use in construction.
I imagine the Starfarers wouldn't be the only species/faction to take such an approach, of course. It might be fun to design some other ships that are clearly built for use in colonization efforts, or to design some cities that are clearly constructed from the remnants of derelict ships or incorporate part of a ship (or a whole ship) into their construction.

Yeah. It's a logical approach. Going hand-in-hand with reduced need for fabrication, there's the bonus of having materials on hand from the start. And that would also reduce things like cost, cause you'd be planning on retooling ships, so wouldn't likely also be sending huge amounts of resources to build initial buildings. Besides cutting costs, it could possibly also reduce likelihood of piracy, as a colonizing ship or fleet of them may not be carrying much cargo.
