A descendant of "Tanukizaka shrine", An ancient shrine dedicated to sacred tanuki who serves as divine messenger for several hundred years.

Shouhei was just an ordinary human boy, until one day he try to save a tanuki cub from felling off the cliff and took their place in the process.
Saw through his good deed, sacred tanuki spirits shared part of their souls to save the young boy from dying, his souls merged with divine spirits, ressurrected and took an appearance of a tanuki beastman.

Although his transformation was absolutely self-aware and stable, his odd eyes usually misleading people that he was consumed by the sacred beast instead.

Later on he was scout by the Rokuhara from the actual stories as a "talented messenger"
