As you might have guessed from my switching back to the applauding Not-Crispin avatar, I've finished another cover illustration! Woo-hoo! Here's a very small section of it.
This is for the first book in the series by Rathacat which was originally published in 1983. I read it back then, when I was 9, and instantly fell in love with the world and the characters. I'm grateful as heck to Sheila at Imaginator Press for giving me this job. This was just an absolute thrill to paint. And rather stressful, too, since the artist who illustrated the last printing was excellent and I had an attack of I'm-not-worthy.
Once again, Bartleby modeled for me, and very patiently put up with my shining a tiny flashlight at his face to figure out how to light Ratha properly.

I love your book covers. I really need to find this series. Should stop spending money on clothes I could do without (two pairs of pants is sufficient... right?) to buy more books. I love books D: And I love being naked. WIN/WIN! xD Blah, sorry for weird comment, am tired. Awesome work per usual, and I can't wait to see the unveiling of the full cover! <3
YES oh man I love the Ratha books! This was one of my favorite books since I was a kid, and I was lucky enough to meet Clare Bell at FC last year. :D
"Attack -of-I'm-not-worthy"?? From you? IMPOSSIBLE.
Your skills are as ever, superb!

I can just imagine the annoyed-cat-squint Bartleby was probably giving you for the flashlight shining. :P The technique worked, though! Looks great.
Y'see, this is why I love this site. It's got its faults and weirdos aplenty, but amongst all the screaming noise you occasionally come across some signal. And this signal is quite something special.
I read that book as a little kid! I only vaguely remember it but I know I liked it. :D It's sort of bizarre to me that the author is on FA, haha
Oh wow, that's interesting timing! We just met her for the first time at FC. I didn't know you were doing a cover for her!
Hi Dear Demon,
This one took my breath away, especially the close-up detail. You are absolutely amazing. By the way, I know you don't do Facebook, but Sheila posted an image of the cover art there and fans are going "oooh, and ahhh". My thanks also to the patient little Bartleby.
Give him a treat from me. And give yourself a treat too.
PS, did anyone here go to Further Confusion 2011? I was on staff as Science Track Lead, and I hope you enjoyed all the Science Track Panels. /CB

Aw, thanks! I tried to base her very closely on your drawings. Bartleby got a whole bag of Party Mix to himself (just not all at once).
Wish I'd gotten to meet you for reals at the con! Science track sounds fun . . .

I haven't read these books yet, but I just ordered them and I can't wait. Ratha's definitely got a gleam in her eye hear.
