Yeah so! Last time the Ormer have shown up in most anything was with chapter 3 of The Long Hike (Big guy who got Iced) Now there are reasons for that
The lore reason is that they are kinda rare, with only 8% of all ëldimor species being Ormer, and secondly as a writing reason I just thought they made no sense for a lot of things.
this is a change to make the ormer more oneyed to more two eyed which at this point im fine with as the oneye has been a years long relic from a tone and time that were a lot more "don't think about it" and prior to when the Ormer and Drekir were closely related
and from back when they were cyclope nagas which, cool! and also just kinda not what they are nor have been for a while
so we have this update to the Ormer to make them big, quadrapedal, more closely Ëldimãon folks
For the awakening period, its not impossible to see Ormer communities that are non sivilão but they are exceptionally rare
so this exploration of Ormer breeds is more applicable to the following periods when more and more ormer communities and cultures break off from the sivilão and expand outwards into their own distinct societies.
So I feel I should give an intro to What Ormer Are to begin with
Ormer are one of the three "Ëldimor" species, the sivilão engineered sapient draconic beings descended from the ancient Ëldimor species that has now been extinct for over 20,000 Planão years. They are designed to exist within sivilão society and are the caste of manufacture. They do the making of everything. From stãl metal to cooking the stews eatin in the Õfuth, hide tanning and woodworking to stone masonry and metalworking. If its made in sivilão society, it had met the long arms of the great drakes of the deep ring cities, churning forth as all machines do with each cycle following the last for eternity
Ormer are the second least populous of the Ëldimor species, making up only about 8% of the total draconic population.. There is about 24 million drekir in the totality of the dragonscape, with about 20 million being non sivilão and the remaining 4 million being sivilão and for comparison that makes for a total of about 1.3 million ormer, with less than some 200,000 of those existing outside of sivilão society. so ormer are quite rare
at least as of Hikers arrival
Most Ormer belong to the sivilão, but there are many small enclaves of non sivilào ormer, many of whom of the lay and raise beyond the ways of lost sivilão days. These ormer, usually referred to as Ormkerrir (heretic ormer) exist in very specific regions, such as the Great Plains of North America and the Patagonian Savanna of South America, as well as at least one notable enclave in northern Alaska
So Ormer anatomy
Ormer are large drake like entities, similar to drekir in a lot of ways (descended from the same source) but with their own notable distinctions.
They can walk four legged or two legged, generally being more fast and agile on four legs but walking on two legs is itself totally viable. They have very very long arms and comparatively short legs which is known to give them an odd, cheetah like gate on four legs and a stable waddle on two. Also while not as theropodic as drekir, they do have a similar body form, two eyes, two ears, and a tail. They do technically have a boot like a drek though it is far smaller and not as pronounced.
Their most notable trait would likely be their arms. Known for long, thick arms that are suited towards a variety of jobs, from stãlsmithing and masonry to carrying titanic pots and pans about. Ormer have an extreme level of arm strength and, thanks to their more flexible torsos, plenty of ability to flex their body and exercise a thick, serpentine torso, allowing them to exert an extreme level of strength, though they aren't quite as (relatively) sturdy and endurable as the drekir. They aren't built to exert a ton of strength constantly
As for diet
Ormer are considerably more omnivorous than drekir, having a far less picky diet. However like drekir they cannot digest cereal grains nor dairy products. Ormer tend to subsist on a diet that is only about 40% meat, with the rest being made up through fruits, vegetables, tubers, etc.
A diet that is far more comparable to a Bear than say, a Coyote
Of course this is mostly due to their size, hard to be picky about your nutrients and calories when you're a giant
And for life cycle
Ormer are very long lived. Usually ormer are polygamous, but unlike drekir, are not promiscuous. They only will seek out mates within their own, very small dens. They are also a K selective species with strong parental instincts for the children that their den produces. It's about 4 months from fertilization to lay, and about an additional 8 months before the hatch. This gravid period is notably more disabling to an orm than say, a dreks gravid period and requires more attention.
Not as much as a human (humans got it rough) but definitely more than a drek
From hatchling to adult
Takes a shocking 40-50 years for an orm. Confusingly they also reach a general mental maturity far before biological maturity. Usually their brains will cease developing in their 30s even if their bodies aren't done growing till their 40s. This is mostly due to the fact that Sivilão ormer pass their trade down directly to their offspring. Giving a youngling decades to learn and master the craft prior to assuming the job.
Though its also... weird.
The best way I would describe an orm kid is a "manchild" in the most literal sense. A 30 year old orm about as smart as a 30 year old drek that is still actually growing into an adult, whereas that drek has been an adult for over a decade The adult period is very long, like with drekir. Most ormer are considered young adults between their 50s- to their early 110s, though tend to suffer a very rapid aging thereafter. With the midlife period lasting between years 110-140 and a rapid elderly decline from their 140s onward with most particularly elder ormer making it to around their 170s at the very oldest, with most passing on in their 150s
so, like drekir, long lived. But not that much more long lived relatively speaking
You could in theory see a particularly well cared for orm living over 200 years though, but that would require a lot of medical technology that isn't there in the current DS
and onto Breeds
with a disclaimer
Namely sivilão ormer are the most common. As the vast majority of ormer are Sivilão ormer. There are even many ormkerrir that are themselves of the sivilão breed just due to them being survivors of Jãrsta (the Pulse) who grew up all the way through to the current day
as a 20 year old kid is gonna remember all of that and be an elder by the time of hikers arrival, on the way out but still
So at least in the time of Hikers arrival, non sivilão ormer do exist but are particularly a newer thing appearing in the past 60 or so years. Most ormer are gonna be sivilão ormer
So lets start with the sivilão breed
The Titans of the Õfuthar, sivilão ormer are notably big Some Õfuthar can make them bigger than shown in the image to absolutely giants. Aside from their size, their scaletones are mandated by the prejag of the Õfuth in question and most sivilão ormer are known to grow armored plates in various patterns along their head and neck and back. Mostly as a natural workplace protection measure.
Stãltank workshops need safety equipment anywho.
Next is the temperate breed
Going furred here to correspond with the newer drek changes. Temperate ormer tend to sport a similar fur to temperate drekir. Unlike temperate drekir, temperate ormer are known to have immensely long, whiplike tails and mooselike antlers. Their tails allow them to scale the (sometimes) massive trees of many temprate zones to access a variety of food sources and the antlers are uh. there. Internally they are Mesotherms. Able to instinctively "turn on" their metabolism in colder times which allows them a degree of tolerance for cold weather that no drek in the region could every hope for and lastly temperate Ormer are one of the smallest breeds of orm
Arid ormer are next
Arid ormer are a normally sized breed, have a familiarly curly bright furpelt and a short tail that does not build up fat. But rather than a fat tail they grow Spinal Sails. a Spine sail is mostly about thermoregulation. Helps speed up how quickly an orm can heat up (As basking a body that big takes a bit) and cool off. Moreover as its gonna absorb more heat innately the blood headin out of the sail can travel to the rest of the body. This helps these large ormer to heat up after a cold desert night and cool off in a hot desert day. More interestingly their blood cells. are particularly small and efficient, along with the rest of their internal body maximizing water efficiency makes them quite naturally adept at not drying out in the deserts of the DragonScape
Then there are tropical ormer
The main large breed of non sivilão ormer. They're uh, kinda like ducks!
Featuring large waterproof feathers, webbed hind feet and a powerful tail that they can use similarly to a crocodile. Tropical ormer are massive, very effective swimmers that are well suited towards wetlands and coastal regions. Though they are also fine on land too. They are also known to be extraordinarily strong in the immune system department. Being particularly resilient to a lot of tropical diseases that destroy humans and can cause problems for drekir, particularly in the realm of parasites, which if you're gonna be in swamp water with frequency, kinda needed
Then there are arctic ormer
Which are the most simple. Horned and wreathed in an incredible amount of fur, Arctic ormer are the warmblooded similar enough relatives of the arctic drekir. Not actually much to say here. Furred and horned on the outside, hotblooded onthe inside, big but not a large breed
And alpine ormer last
Alpine ormer are also a large breed, with many big enough to size up sivilão ormer (with some doing just that) They are also wooled like alpine drekir though their wool is distinctly more of a llama wool than a sheeps wool. This wool extends to "glove" their hands and feet and they are known to have a shortish tail (might make it shorter)
they don't grow horns though! Just the wool, they are also of course warm blooded
So yeah Ormer Update!
Really wanted to bring them more in line with the modern tone of the dragonscape as well as the more recent lore (relatively speaking, this change was 2 years ago) that linked the Drekir, Ormer, and Mavõtur
The lore reason is that they are kinda rare, with only 8% of all ëldimor species being Ormer, and secondly as a writing reason I just thought they made no sense for a lot of things.

I guess maybe we're gonna hike through the Great Plains so maybe we'll see some of them fellas?
Of any place you would find em, that is one of those places, not a lot of sivilão there
Very interesting. I like your lore posts :D
I'm curious what the Mavõtur look like.
Maybe it's been shown, but I must have missed it in that case.

Thanks! They have appeared in some of the sivilão drawings but they haven’t gotten focus in a while

There is the most recent picture involving some! Though I will be working on updates to them soon

Does this mean the dragons are being updated to two eyed as well?
The Mavõtur? Oh they don't have eyes and thus far still don't, aside from what they build for themselves
