".....Chautecoa? You aren't playing some kind of trick on me, are you?"
The spirit of Chautecoa was summoned to Anuhe's side, their gaze on the same pristine crystal surface that Anuhe was staring at.
"No, Anuhe, and I can see it as well. Your reflection... You're a Vaporeon like me!"
Anuhe slightly tilted his head while trying to make sense of what he was seeing, which the reflection mimicked perfectly along with him as if it were also confused to be looking back at a Sylveon.
Anuhe then let out a puzzled sigh before addressing his spirit companion again, "I didn't think you'd be able to alter something like that anyway, but I had to be sure. It's just so strange. It looked like it could have been your body, and yet I know it is still myself."
"The resemblance is uncanny, but I do see more of you in this than myself." Chautecoa remarked, "Those bandages are definitely your style, and your bracelets are the exact same as they are right now, still with the amethyst gems. It is a very peculiar mirror! Perhaps the crystals throughout this cave have some special properties to them."
"I would agree with you there, except..." Anuhe said as his tone became increasingly melancholic, "I'm beginning to think it's not just a reflection; I think it may actually be me."
"I, uh... I'm not sure I take your meaning, Anuhe."
Anuhe explained, somewhat uncomfortably, "You know how the stories about humans say they come from another world, maybe even different worlds for different humans? I'm wondering if this mirror is similar to that idea, a different Pokémon world, and a different version of myself. Because well... I've never told this to anyone except my dad, but before I had evolved, I was seriously considering wanting to be a Vaporeon. I very nearly became one too, I had a water stone available and all, before I did ultimately evolve into a Sylveon."
"Really now?" The ghost asked intrigued, "And you think this reflection is the version of yourself that took the stone?"
"The longer I look at it, the more true it seems. I know it may be imaginative, but it appears exactly how I would have looked if I had."
Chautecoa chuckled lightheartedly, "Well, from my personal judgement, you are fantastic as a Sylveon, but I know you would have made a great Vaporeon too!"
Chautecoa waited for Anuhe to respond, but he didn't. He just kept starring at the crystal mirror, looking increasingly forlorn as the moments passed, causing Chautecoa to become concerned.
"Anuhe, please tell me. You're not... unhappy with the form you evolved into, are you?
Anuhe then snapped out of his trance, turning towards the spirit, "Huh? Oh, no I'm perfectly happy as a Sylveon. It's just that I can't help but wonder sometimes about what life might have been like if I had chosen differently. It was a difficult decision to make at the time." He said before looking once more at the mirror.
"Oh, I understand, but since your Vaporeon self also has the bracelets, I get the feeling that their life is no less strange than yours. Come on, we should probably get back on the move. I'm not sure it's healthy to dwell too much on this."
"Yeah, you're probably right." Anuhe sighed as he turned and moved on from the large crystal, continuing his path through the cave, "I'm sorry, Chautecoa. I didn't mean to make you think I was sad. That was just... Weird to see."
"It's a little bizarre for me too." Chautecoa added, "You realize that if you're a Vaporeon in that reality, then I could probably be something different as well, or maybe I don't exist at all there."
"Oh wow, I didn't think of that." Anuhe chuckled to himself, "In fact we could all be shifted into each others forms across those worlds, you, myself, and the rest of the ghosts. I think I'm done looking at these crystals. I constantly changed my mind about what I wanted to evolve into when I was a kid, so I don't want to keep seeing different evolutions of myself in these reflections."
"Ah yes, the dilemma of many young Eevees." Chautecoa jested at Anuhe's side, "But if you don't mind me asking, why did you choose not to take the stone, after going through the trouble of getting it?"
Anuhe was hesitant to open up his childhood, but if he was going to tell any of the spirits, Chautecoa was at least a good friend to tell it to.
"Oh, well... Admittedly I procrastinated on using it. I felt sure enough about evolving before I got the water stone, but once I had it, it threw things back into question again. I evolved into Sylveon while I was still weighing the pros and cons, and while I was evolving, it just felt... Right somehow, and I just embraced it."
"Evolution is certainly worth taking all the time needed before acting on it, so you made the right choice." Chautecoa reassured Anuhe before adding, "Although, in a way you are also incredibly lucky. When you perform a joining with us, you get to experience what it's like to be all the different evolutions anyway, isn't that right?"
Anuhe smiled back at Chautecoa, "That's true, and on top of that, a joining turns us into something pretty unique that no other Eevee could dream of becoming. I guess I should be thankful for that."
"Speaking of which, it looks like this stream leads to an underground lake up ahead. If you're yearning to swim as great as your reflection does, how about you let me in for a bit?" Chautecoa said all coaxingly.
"You know what... I'd like that very much." Anuhe said with a relieved sigh, his tail becoming finned as he stepped foot into the water.

Any relation to this? A cave and alternate realities make me wonder if the reflections here are what remains of Nyx's influence.
Haha, actually the funny thing is I did use that picture as a reference for the artist to make a cave background. However, no it is not the same cave, or the same type of crystals that I had in mind for this story.
That said, Nyx's powers do dabble into the concepts this story provides as part of her wish-granting abilities, but this particular image and story is not meant to tie back to Nyx. uwu

A heartwarming story between Anhue and Chautecoa! I think I love the relationship between these two now hehe. Def interesting to see Anhue talk more about his childhood and the struggles he had with choosing what to evolve into! Overall great story Lukos!
If you're referring to the picture before this, Little Monster, then no. That drawing was part of a request, and was meant to be something more lighthearted and humorous. Not all of my submissions are tied to lore. uwu
