You Do You! ©2022 by (((Trevor Patrick)))
-- and she said:
"But, hey, that's fine...
You do you!"
Yeah,
the you do
to do you
is a hoodoo
(and yer in deep doo-doo)
'cuz who do
you actually mean?
-- might as well
be honest for once:
"You do you"
or "You SCREW you"--
yeah,
that's what you're REALLY thinking of
telling me to do me.
Not so much as an ounce
of sincerity to be found:
Even in its mildest
and most harmless larval form,
"you do you"
is merely passive-aggressive//
merely dismissive
But when it develops
its bloodsucking mouthparts,
"you do you"
is a baited rat trap
ready to break the spine
or at the very least
the fingers
of whatever relationship
you might once have had:
Maybe Momma,
Maybe Dad...
Family/Friend/Lover
Acquaintance/Associate/Other
Travellin' from the
Y to the why
to the N
to he end
and the
final flex
to the Ex.
"You do you..."
(with the trailing
silent/ominous:
"...if you're prepared
to reap the consequences//
ready to pay the price,
'cuz I sure as Hell
ain't gonna warn ya twice..."
or:
"You do you"
with an open sneer
or deceptively mild
(with the unspoken/high-handed
"...I got no more respect for you
'cuz you're acting like a child.'
"Be reasonable. Do it MY way!"
(lest any cooperation I previously offered
suddenly dry up and blow away)
"You do you"
('cuz I think yer full of shit)
"You do you"
('cuz yer havin' a little snit)
"You do you"
(I want nothin' but the best for you!
I mean it with all my sarcastic love)
"You do you"
(yeah, ya really done f**ked up).
And now that it's time
to reach that bottom line:
Yeah,
"You do you"
is almost never
sincere or true;
yet, I do I
is almost never a lie.

Not a lot to see here, other than an: "Old man yells at cloud" type of rant.
But, I think I'm old enough now, to have earned the right to a few of those. :P
For the short and dirty:
I've said in more than one previous piece that there are certain sayings and expressions that are almost never uttered in a truly sincere and/or truthful fashion. One of the newer and more trendy ones that really grinds my gears is variations of the three-word phrase: "You do you!"
I have yet to see that phrase written or spoken in anything other than mere passive-aggressiveness at its mildest, most larval form, and ranging through bitter sarcasm or: "You done f**ked up!" in some of its harsher forms.
I never thought I would see the day when something could give: "Have a nice life!" a run for its money.
