Back when Sonic ’06 was still an upcoming thing and not one of the worst games of all time, I heard about Silver and thought the concept was awesome; getting to play as a flying psychic hedgehog sounded amazing! Needless to say, I was very disappointed to find out how ’06 had turned out. I forgot all about Silver until Team Sonic Racing came out, and after watching the cutscenes, he quickly became one of my favorite Sonic characters! He’s a lovable dork with psychic powers and a great relationship with Blaze; abysmal debut aside, what’s not to love?
Silver laid back in his gondola, sighing in contentment. This was the life; much as he loved his time, sometimes the past had it beat in vacation spots. Soleanna had seemed familiar from the moment he set eyes on it; he’d been there in the future, but somehow, he got the feeling that wasn’t it. Whatever the reason, he’d figure it out one day; right now, he was getting some R & R. Castle Town had it all: swimming, good food, great sights; what wasn’t to love? There were even interesting locals! He could see that guard who had sent him on an hour-long wild goose chase trying to find his captain, that weird Sonic fan running laps around the city, Shadow arguing with that weird Sonic fan running laps around the city-
Wait, what?!
Shadow growled in annoyance. For the last time, he was not out to steal his popularity, he was not “impersonating a super hero”, let alone doing a terrible job of it, and he WAS NOT A FAKER!
Yes, he saw the irony. Sadly, it seemed to be lost on “Sonic Man”, who had been making bizarre accusations and demands for a race for the last 10 minutes. He’d tried running, but the crazy idiot was surprisingly quick, and Master had their only Chaos Emerald.
He was still debating whether making him Master’s meal was worth subjecting the snake to this stupidity.
A gondola rounded the corner, and Shadow seized his opportunity. He pointed with a shout; that child needed help! While Sonic Man whirled around, the Ultimate Lifeform dove onto the boat, swiftly shushing Silver as they went under a bridge.
The “super hero” ran off, realizing he’d been tricked, and Shadow sighed in relief. Finally, he was free.
Silver cheerfully greeted his friend; he hadn’t seen him since the Grand Prix! Still, they should probably put the reunion on hold; there was a kid they needed to help!
Shadow rolled his eyes. He’d made up the kid to try and escape the annoying guy accusing him of being an imposter.
Silver scratched his head. Yeah, he’d never seen Sonic Man go off on someone like that. It was almost like he just had some deep dislike of Shadow that couldn’t be explained, like him and billiards!
The Ultimate Lifeform quirked an eyebrow. Billiards?
The psychic hedgehog shrugged. For some reason, the balls just filled him with the urge to try and launch them through the stratosphere. He didn’t know why; he’d never played.
…Shadow was pretty sure anyone who’d been around Omochao for too long knew a similar feeling. That aside, was the future in danger again?
Silver assured him it wasn’t, and explained why he was there. Surprisingly, Shadow was in Soleanna for the same reason, along with Big of all people; the two shared a Ma – mutual acquaintance, who’d insisted on the two taking a break. It had been easier to go along with it than argue; their acquaintance, a snake called Ma – Kaa was surprisingly persuasive.
Silver grinned. Makaa sounded interesting; anyone who could get Shadow to sit back and soak up some sun was definitely someone he wanted to meet.
Shadow stifled a chuckle. His name wasn’t – actually, never mind. Just stick to Kaa, he preferred it. And it looked like they’d be meeting him in 3, 2, 1…
Silver didn’t have time to react before Shadow grabbed his hand and the side of a suddenly shaking boat.
Something was biting!
Big rapidly reeled in his catch, the rod bending under the weight; this was going to be a big one!
Kaa looked up from his resting spot, wrapped around Big’s neck like a lei. Funny, he wasn’t seeing a fish…
The snake looked over the line, tracing it to its end. His eyes widened; Big, that wasn’t a-
Kaa didn’t get the chance to finish his sentence before the boat went flying towards them.
Big’s ears drooped. Oops.
Silver frantically reached out with his powers, grabbing the gondola and stopping it in midair. Everyone present breathed a sigh of relief as the boat lowered to the ground.
Big apologized; he’d thought the only thing in the water was fish!
Silver brushed it off. He was fine, just watch out for boats next time.
Shadow smirked. It had gotten them to shore faster; he was fine with it.
The shaken snake spoke up; perhaps they could try shortcuts that didn’t involve launching vehicles at him?
Shadow sheepishly apologized as Silver cheerfully greeted the snake. Kaa was happy to meet him; he’d heard so much from Shadow, all positive (Silver beamed at that). His powers were certainly impressive; Kaa was no psychic, but he had a power of his own if Silver wanted to see.
Silver nodded enthusiastically; he was always up for seeing some cool new power!
Kaa chuckled; Excellent! They should probably head to the beach first; his power worked best with fewer people around. Last he’d seen, the beach was still empty since Big had tried swimming, gone underwater with only an ear above the surface, and everyone had run away screaming about mutant sharks.
Silver was happy to oblige; if any sharks came, he’d toss them back into the sea! None of them would get a chance to chomp down on Big’s ear!
The snake snickered; how about they saved that for after the demonstration?
The animals arrived at the stairs to the beach. Kaa deemed it close enough; there was no one in sight and the top of the stairs had a great view.
The snake lowered himself from Big’s neck, now face-to-face with Silver. So, was he ready to see his power?
Silver gave him a thumbs up; whatever it was, he was sure it was awesome!
Kaa smirked. Oh, it was; all Silver needed to do was look deep into his eyes…
Silver gave a determined glare; he didn’t see anything, but he’d-
Silver’s eyes widened as Kaa’s own lit up with spirals. Beautiful, swirling colors filled his vision, sweeping up his thoughts and gently washing them away. Every ring filled him with bliss, and the deeper he looked, the more he soaked up their special shine, and the more he never wanted to look away. No vacation could compare to this! The hedgehog moaned in happiness as Kaa’s tail slid through his fur, the snake’s touch sending shivers down his spine. Soon enough, Silver was cocooned in coils, panting as Kaa’s body pressed and squeezed against his own. Pupils shrunken to pinpricks, his tongue lolling out, a wide smile across his face – Silver had never been happier.
Kaa’s words only added to his pleasure, the snake’s soft tones gently settling in his mind: How good he was doing by staring into the spirals, how good they made him feel. How he was a good hedgehog, and good hedgehogs got to feel like this all the time. How he’d continue to be good, becoming Kaa’s beloved pet. How a pet was free of thought and troubles, their master handling those things for them. How he only needed to concern himself with his master’s needs – food, shelter, protection, play, conversation, anything – and how in return, his master would love him, offering praise, snuggles, and so many spirals.
Eyes swirling with color, open, smiling mouth drooling, Silver was in heaven. Of course he wanted it to continue; he’d never felt this good in his life! He wanted to be a pet, needed to be a good hedgehog for Master!
A final tug on the neck sealed the deal, a PING! echoing in Silver’s head as the hedgehog broke into a dopey grin.
Kaa grinned as he pet his happily purring hedgehog; Silver was so cute! This had been a great vacation; he’d let his pets do their own thing, wandering the town and enjoying themselves, and all on their own, they’d brought him a pet! Those two were getting a big reward later! All that was left was to move and-

Shadow groaned in exasperation, burying his face in his hands. Really?! Now?!
Kaa could only watch in confusion as Shadow argued with… “Sonic Man”, apparently.
And he’d thought Big was strange.
