"Hello! My name is Sloan. I'm a bounty hunter who operates out in nullsec space. I've just finished picking up a bounty and I'm on my way back. Ship's on auto-pilot and I've got a pretty long and boring trip ahead of me, so I thought, hey, why not, I'll do one of these online interview things. Assuming my connection to the Hyperspace Network doesn't fail and I don't get attacked by pirates or anything, I'll be here answering whatever questions you might have about what my life and job are like. I don't know what planet this signal might be getting picked up on, so I'm hoping I might get some interesting questions! Feel free to ask whatever."
Hi everyone! I have had my relatively new character Sloan on the mind lately. She's a sci-fi bounty hunter who has a hammerspace suit that lets her conceal her prey, though her gut reappears if she takes the suit off. I really enjoyed the AMA ("Ask Me Anything") that I did with those three rabbits a few months ago; I got a great response and I ended up really getting to flesh those characters out, even though the AMA got cut off by that weirdness with CuriousCat losing their domain. Since I'm thinking about a longer-form story with Sloan, I'd like to do this again as a character building exercise, and I'd love to have your help!
The idea is that you can ask questions to Sloan directly, and I'll have her answer in-character. I'm not comfortable with CuriousCat anymore, so I'm going to try this Tellonym thing. The link is here:
https://tellonym.me/rabbitinafoxden
If you'd prefer, you can also reply to this post directly. Answers on Tellonym will be posted to Twitter as they come. When the interview is done, I'll compile all the answers from both locations into one document and share that on my Google Drive gallery, as well as here (possibly in a journal). I don't have a set time limit for this; I'll keep answering questions all weekend (and probably for as long as I keep getting questions.)
I may do some art with a few of the responses, but honestly I don't know how much energy I'm going to have for that this weekend. Just this sketch ended up being really difficult for some reason. So expect the majority of the responses to be text based.
Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any questions you might have.

what is the biggest prey you've ever had, and how big have you gotten your belly before?
Sloan: "The biggest individual prey I've taken was a female cow. She was the daughter of some rich businessman who had decided to leave home and use the wealth she could take with her to start her own 'criminal empire.' Basically, she was a spoiled rich girl who thought she could be a mob boss and ended up making enemies very quickly. Apart from being a species that's just big in general, she herself was... hefty, I'll put it that way. When she refused to come quietly (because of course she did), I could barely get her down.
"This was one of those bounties where the client didn't particularly care whether or not she was alive, so uh... I ended up keeping her. I wasn't sure she was going to come back up easily.
"In regards to your second question, though, my last answer was in regards to a time I ate a whole bodyguard team. My gut when I took off the suit that night was absolutely enormous -- that's probably the biggest it's ever been. I think."

those are impressive feats. sounds like you could use some training to handle bigger prey though.
What do you like to do when you're not bounty hunting?
"I spend a lot of time on my ship. My ship is my home, and it requires a lot of upkeep and maintenance. I've learned how to do a lot of that myself, and it's very easy to while away hours in a safe port working on it. (I do sometimes have to hire mechanics for jobs that are beyond me.)
"When it comes to long hours on the ship -- a good portion of space travel is just floating through emptiness while the ship is on autopilot -- the hypernet has a lot of entertainment available, and I mean a lot. I read a lot of books (or, to be more accurate, I like to listen to audio books), watch movies, and even play some online games (though I'll add that I'm not very good at those. I'm a pretty casual player. I like MMOs!)
"And, while watching or listening to things, I, er...
"I knit.
"Yeah, I know, it's not the kind of thing you would expect from a tough-as-nails bounty hunter, but everyone's gotta have hobbies, right? Give me a break!"

I would never make fun of someone for their hobbies! Especially someone who could probably beat me to a pulp and eat me, lol. Knitting and MMOs are great!
"It depends on how we define 'capacity.' My own capacity regarding how much I can fit in my stomach is... pretty darn high. My skin is very stretchy, and my gut can handle a lot of food. As I understand it, my ancestors evolved to be able to bloat themselves when food is available, so they could survive when food was scarce. Honestly, I'm not sure I've ever actually hit a real limit.
"Of course, without the suit, it's not so much that I can't eat more, it's that at some point I become immobile. The suit itself doesn't really let my stomach hold any more than it could otherwise, as much as it solves the problem of the weight and size of my gut after I've eaten a few prey. If the suit itself has a limit, I've never even come close to hitting it.
"Anyway, long answer short: with the suit, I can comfortably eat two or maybe three people, depending on how big they are. At that point I start feeling really full, and if I'm not wearing the suit it'll slow me down quite a bit. I try not to go much further than that, because it's a risk that doesn't usually outweigh any reward.
"But... I'm certain I could push myself further, a lot further, if I ever really needed to."

You're a cane toad, right? Does that mean if someone licked you they would get high? Or would they just punched in the nose? 🤣
Sloan: "Secreting my toxins is a voluntary action. I have to intentionally do it, though it does sometimes trigger involuntarily if I feel threatened (it's one of the reasons I usually wear gloves, so I don't accidentally get them on things that I didn't mean to.) So if you tried to eat me or bite me, you'd be in a lot of trouble. If you were to lick me under normal circumstances, at most you might feel a little dizzy.
"Well, at least until I punch you in the nose. You definitely had that part right."

Sloan: "While it is theoretically possible for me to store other things in the suit, it wasn't really made with that in mind, and I try to avoid doing it because 1) it's usually uncomfortable, and 2) depending on what it is, it could potentially damage the suit. But, in a pinch, I've stashed things in there before."
What's your weapon of choice when it comes to your job?
Sloan: "Why, my tongue and belly, of course! While I do have an arrangement of guns and other weaponry, my biological weapons have a huge advantage: I can smuggle them ANYWHERE. There are scanners out there that can detect the presence of weapons, even in folded space, but very few people realize that I myself AM a weapon. I can get into clubs or other places with tight security, gulp down a target, and then just waltz right back out with no-one the wiser. So yeah, I'll use whatever is necessary for a job, but my gullet remains my favorite."
Oh! That is... surprisingly practical! And very clever, I might add.
Your trade secret's safe with me though, don't worry.
As long as you sponsor for it.

How do bounties work? Is there a formal system or is it done more privately? What sort of things do people get bounties on their heads for?
Sloan: "There isn't really a 'formal system' per se, though there are a few boards on the hypernet that the serious clients usually post their bounties on. Bounty hunters who are interested can see all the bounties for their region of space. Occasionally I get mercenary jobs, too, and those are usually done privately.
"You see, I live in nullsec space: it's an area where there isn't really any government or military to speak of, so it's kind of a lawless place, in general. The majority of my clients fall into two categories:
"1) The mob. There are a number of organized crime groups and families that operate out here. Sometimes someone does something to piss them off, and that person gets a bounty put on them. These are often people who have done something to get these families really angry at them; bounties aren't usually used for random innocents they want to scare (they have enforcers for that.) These are things like lower-level criminals who have tried to move in on the wrong territory. These tend to be the 'dead or alive' type of contracts. And then there's...
"2) Military or law enforcement organizations that operate outside nullsec space. These groups sometimes have people that they're after who come here to hide, and bounties are a useful way to get someone to extract them. These guys tend to want their quarry still breathing.
"Of course, not every client falls into one of those categories, but they seem to be the most common. And honestly, most of the time, I don't ask. A bounty is a bounty, and as long as the client pays me, there's no reason to go asking a lot of questions. I just get the job done."

** To RabbitInAFoxDen: I loved your rabbit pred AMA! I'm so pleased you're doing it again. Please keep it up! Out of curiosity, I'll ask Sloan the same question I asked the girls **
May I start by say how kind of you it is to give up your time. I have a question for you, if you'd be so kind as to answer it. Do you like squirming prey, or do you prefer it when it's frozen with fear?
