Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games; I’ve beaten it around half a dozen times on the DS. Chrono Cross, on the other hand, I’ve never played; I’d looked into it a few times, but between lacking a PS anything and me not understanding the battle system, I wasn’t really interested. Honestly, I’d mostly forgotten about it until the Radical Dreamers Edition came out. That’s when I started getting interested, trying to understand the plot, looking into the many, many characters, and finally understanding the battle system. Since then, my opinion’s improved quite a bit; I still vastly prefer Chrono Trigger, but the sequel’s definitely got its merits. Definitely going to get it when it’s on sale and I have the chance.
A major plus of me remembering the game is remembering some of the characters I thought were cute, especially Draggy. He’s both an adorable baby dragon and, from what I understand, pretty good in combat! His speech annoys me a bit for some reason, but otherwise, I love the guy! I’d hoped to see hypno art of him for ages, I just never did, and I ended up forgetting about him. Then the RD edition came out, along with its beautiful title screen, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I’d hoped to do Pip as well, but the one expression of his I could find other than his usual :X face was… less than usable.
I’m pretty sure this is the first picture of Draggy hypnotized; I hope you enjoy it!
It had been a few months since Draggy had hatched, awakening in the Dodo’s nest. Life was hard in the beginning; the bird he’d thought was his mother or father sent him fleeing for safety when it tried to eat him. He’d had to survive on his own as he searched for his family; he’d hoped they were just out playing. Finding them fossilized hadn’t been fun; he’d thought he’d be alone forever.
But then he’d heard his mother’s voice, telling him that she’d always be with him, and that friends were out there if he didn’t give up. Draggy felt warm inside after that; he was still sad she was gone, but at least he had hope. He wondered who his first friend would be; maybe a big talking cat?
What he found was just as good - a clown’s angry skull!
Skelly was funny once he’d calmed down; they’d had a lot of laughs looking for his bones. He was pretty sure they’d found most of them by now. And along with the bones, he’d found lots of friends! There was Pip, the lamb/squirrel/goat thing running from a weird science lady, Starky, the alien trying to fix his ship and go home, Leah, the little cavegirl – oh, and Turnip! The talking vegetable soldier!
Turnip said he might be a dream. Draggy wasn’t really sure how that worked.
Either way, the island he’d found Turnip on was such a nice place to play! The forest was great for hide and seek! It was his turn to seek today. (Someone had grabbed Skelly and hidden him; not having legs was a problem.) He hadn't had much luck finding anybody; Draggy had been hopping from tree, trying to catch a glimpse of someone for what felt like ages. Maybe they were under the empty house?
Draggy flew over to the house, and ran in a circle beneath it. Nope, no one there!
A rustling tree caught his eye, and Draggy flew into it. Found-
A very startled snake, who fell out of the tree and flat on his face.
The little dragon hopped down; was the snake alright?
The snake rose up, shaking himself off. He was fine, he just didn’t expect a dragon to pop up while he was resting.
Draggy hung his head. He was sorry…
The snake chuckled; he forgave him! He was Kaa, by the way.
Draggy introduced himself, and explained what he was doing. Had Kaa seen any of his friends?
Kaa could safely say no; any of the people he just described would definitely stand out.
The cute baby dragon sighed; back to searching.
The snake spoke up; before Draggy left, perhaps he had time to play? He had a game he’d been working on, one very special to him, and he needed people to try it with.
Draggy thought for a moment, and nodded. His friends weren’t going anywhere; if it was quick, he could play!
Kaa snickered; trust him, it was quick. There were only three steps. First, he needed to wrap up Draggy in a cuddly coil cocoon. He might want to sit down for this.
The dragon sat down with a smile as he was draped in coils, only his head and tail sticking out. It was fine with him; Kaa’s coils were comfy!
Kaa chuckled; he was glad Draggy liked them. Now, step 2 was to look him in the eyes, and see how long he can go without blinking.
Draggy stared in awe as Kaa’s eyes filled with colors; soft, soothing colors that drew in the dragon’s thoughts, gently washing over them and leaving Draggy feeling warm and fuzzy. Kaa called him over, and Draggy leaned forwards, unaware of how his pupils shrank, or the smile creeping up on his face; all he knew was how good the spirals felt, and how happy he was to have a closer, deeper look. The snake’s tail petted his head, and Draggy leaned into it, sighing in satisfaction as swirls filled his sight and the snake’s voice filled his head.
He heard several things: how good it was he had trusted Kaa, how his trust made the snake more than a friend. How he was clever to make Kaa his master, someone who would take care of his thinking and free will. How Draggy would be a cute and cuddly companion to his master, his pet and playmate, sweet and swirly-eyed. How his master would make him feel loved, with words, with coils, with colors.
Dazed, drooling and delighted, Draggy nodded along; of course he’d be Master’s pet! He’d play with Master, and get lots of love and cuddles!
The snake’s tail gave his neck a tug, and with a PING! Draggy broke into the widest smile he’d ever made.
Step 3 was complete.
Kaa couldn’t help but coo as he looked over Draggy, definitely one of his cutest pets. The little dragon was staring swirly-eyed into space, his tail wagging a mile a minute. He couldn’t believe how lucky he’d gotten; he hadn’t even known Draggy existed before today!
He’d gone easy on the drake, and he’d fallen quite easily; he was only a child after all. He’d only go so far with younger pets. Their fun would be along the lines of sleepwalking across his coils, cuddling when it got cold at night, or running and slithering through the jungle in a game of tag or hide and seek.
Which reminded him…
Hadn’t Draggy mentioned having friends?
