'Ceremonial Repose' for the 2011 Werewolf Calendar
"Werewolf courtship and mating can be a beautifully elaborate and dangerous time of werewolf's life. Wild werewolf males will compete for female attention through extensively elaborate displays of body painting and hand crafted jewelry as well as tiresome marathons of dancing displays meant to lure the attention of individual females. Werewolves will braid their pelts and adorn them with multicolor ribbons of beads made from different materials. When dancing, beads of glass, wood, and stone will rub and hit against each other eliciting a rhythmic sound meant to accompany their individual courtship dance. Feathers of birds native to the region, often dyed with naturally found pigments, will also be braided into and attached to their pelt. As wild werewolves require camouflage to hunt, they will rarely adorn themselves with wildly colorful displays of jewelry and feathers thus making courtship all the more a special event in werewolf life; a chance for each werewolf to stand out as an individual."

Having always avoided the 'native american' flavor of werewolves, for fear of trespassing on other's foundations of the idea, I have decided to give it a go this time around as the idea presented itself very strongly. Hope you folks enjoy. This has been sitting around more or less finished for sometime, but I wasn't happy with some of the minor details until now C:.

Oh wow this is simply stunning so much that words can explain it
you too???!?
Once I did find my breath (and realize it wasn't a photomanip) I found myself trying to piece together the tribes showing in this fella's dress selections....a wonderful piece indeed!!

Balaa at the finest, don't you think so? only from Goldenwolf had i seen so fine a piece! BTW, Springheel, at your service!
native american themes may be commonplace for depiction of wolves, but I can't say I have seen something like this before - this feels more south american than north american. :) so in effect I do think it feels very fresh to me; I like it!
most of his ceremonial gear looks like plains indians (Pawnee and the like), decidedly North American.
and now of course I want to see a South American version of this insight into Werewolf life!!!

Very Plains Indians indeed. I love how there's even mimicry of the Sioux people, which had a grouping here called the Kaw/Kansa (South Wind People).
it's the red bristle mohawky thing that's sticking in my head...
The first thing that came to ind was, what pow wows did you attend here in the southwest? this is right out of some of them. Out standing!
Wow. Absolutely amazing. How much research did you do to create his costume? I do not have an extensive background in Native American costumes, but I've been to enough Indian markets and exhibitions to know you're pretty spot on with your depiction.
By the way, have you ever considered using Native art from the Pacific Northwest as inspiration? Its imagery is rarely used in a lot of art, but it is very bold and striking. I'd love to see a costume, on whatever animal, derived from there.

This is so amazing. I wish I could say more but I'm utterly speechless. If I could fave this a hundred times I would.
You're going to get a ton of praise over this one, extremely beautiful and detailed. Thank you for posting, it;s wonderful to see things other than nude on FA. Lovely.
I've been waiting to see this full size! Makes me happy. I love all the different textures and colours. :D
He needs his manly stud whiskers though!

I left them out JUST to taunt you (Ironically though, a few seconds after I uploaded it, I noticed there weren't whiskers..and wondered if anyone would spot it).
Now you dun it, this will bug me :/...*scribbles on whiskers*

Oh my, a WILD BALAA APPEARS!
And the wild Balaa carries art. \o/
It looks beautiful and stunning, especially the antlers.

Ahhh! :D Its' been so long since I've seen such an amazing realistic native american werewolf! The detail in the fur and his accessories is absolutely breathtaking. A-freakin'-mazing work! I love that fur <3
Very beautifully detailed work!!... I like how you really went all out with the native american costume here. I've seen many native american wolves, but never before one that felt genuine, until now =)
Utterly astounding work! I'd love to see this blown up farther to see every teeny detail :D
Woho! now this is AWESOME! What do I need to do to get this on my wall!! I would have someone paint this on my wall!
This is incredible. The detail is stunning, and I'm not sure words can really explain how great it looks.
Simply breathtaking and I know someone who would love this to pieces, too ;) I think I'll link him to this tonight.
Why is it ALWAYS Plains Indians? There is still, for example, a large Wampanoag population over here in MA. (you know... pocahontas.)
Not criticizing the art -- it's great, don't get me wrong! I just think that you could have made a much more interesting cultural statement...
(Or calendar content aside, why not have made the character a coyote, which are actually far more common.)

1) That's why a lot of the pieces in the calender won't be.
2) Cliche, may be. But it's a commercial project and the theme sales. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
3) Still doesn't explain why you would suggest making the character a coyote for a werewolf calender. But hey, could always e-mail you ideas in via their website.

I could be wrong, but I definately recall learning in college that Pocohantas was a part of the Powhatan tribe (named after their chief), and that there are no survivors.
Anyway, last year's calendar included an asian werewolf, south asian werewolf (Balaa's), and a south american werewolf. So both the calendar and Balaa herself have illustrated things other than the plains indians.

Well if I was the artist,I would probably stick with my Tribe(Plains Indian) as piece to depict them in that certain regalia but Bagheera makes a good point :P
No words need be written here. I can only smile, admire such talents and look in awe }:=)
truly a beautiful piece you created.Question, ho do you create that fur texture?
That is beyond beautiful! I love every part of this so much.
My eyes bleed from the sheer amount of awesome that flows off this picture.oo
Baala hello, go deep and make the mind fly ... very pleased to read what you wrote, in a lyrical sense and delicious, deeply into the feelings of the werewolves (like me). Everything is resolved in a rhythmic dance and spiritual. The communion between two souls to become one. Congratulations, excellent work. I stand and I take my hat off to you
You really finished this strong and brought all of the elements of his design together! Reminds me of the few pow-wows I got to attend when I lived in Ventura. Exceptional =)
Well you know I approve http://www.furaffinity.net/view/922145/
So good to see you post stuff once again. So much detail and color to this.

Ant chance that the print for this will be available before Christmas? I'd like to get one for my Mom.
Unfortunately not, but for less than the price of 2 prints you could have the whole calendar ^__^. I think that's a steal, and theres really a lot of beautiful art in the calendar besides this piece [:..think it'd be a great xmas gift ^^;. Thank you for the interest though, I really appreciate it!
I love it,you added a twist of southern men's fancy dance regalia and a bit of men's traditional and grass dancer headpiece. I'm Native so I recognize the regalia and pieces of it,it looks nice XD lulz plains Indians.
The detail and realism are absolutely superb. Seriously, this could be a photo, the quality is so fine. Beautiful artwork!
Hi! Thank you kindly for the interest C:, unfortunately prints won't be available until mid of next year. Though I would highly recommend buying the whole calendar as you get 14 pieces of art for the price of 2 prints x}!!
Thank you for your interest though! It is always appreciated.

You could probably make good money if you sold a bunch of Indian themed pictures like this at the Plaza Art Fair in Kansas City.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I truly worried it would offend Native Americans or read as inaccurate though of course that was the furthest thing from my intent. Where in the fandom tribal werewolves are kinda considered cliche, I think the is a very primal appeal to them for me. I knew when I got my assignment for that year that I wanted to paint this. Im so happy about the reaction it has garnered and it is wonderful to hear such words from someone who shares in this beautiful culture! ya made my day!
I, too, am a bit late in coming across this. This is one of the few pieces of art that stopped me in my tracks. From the lighting, texture and the rightness of the whole image, I found I could not take my eyes off it. I'm glad to know, after contacting you, this is still available at the present time as a print.
I must say all your work is fantastic - and this image holds special meaning for me. Well done.
