Stitches has gone through not one, not two, but three reference sheets in her storied history. This one, however, is special, as her species has completely changed into something new, a creature of my own design: a Raglin. I couldn't be happier with her new design, as I went through several sketches and reinterpretations before I finally landed on this version. And the best part is, she's not the only Raglin I'll be drawing from now on either! Anhow, some story stuff with her below:
Name: Cross Stitch
Nickname: Stitches
Species: Raglin
Age: Unknown
Height: 3'6" (106.7cm)
Weight: Varies
Occupation: Plush restoration (unofficial)
Likes: Pranks, plush toys, sewing, cute boys, cute girls, pink, black, pastries, silly hats
Dislikes: hard objects, sharp objects, food, stains, intruders
Personality: Stitches has no interest in her previous life, and doesn't have much interest in learning about it either. Despite this she has many of her former qualities, such as a passion for toy making and a deeply caring personality. Her first instinct is to try and push newcomers away, but individuals that are kind despite her mischievous nature will occasionally find themselves as her regular victims of pranks and torments. Her intent is rarely to harm though, and ultimately those she latches on to are usually well cared for even if her pranks can grow tiresome. While being aloof is a typical trait of Raglins, Stitches deviates from her isolation frequently to seek companionship with her friends, usually in the form of forced intimacy (although it's dubious consent at its worst). While alone she locates plush toys and brings them to her home to repair them, the work itself often a subconscious effort. Despite her attachments, anyone that intrudes on her home (A burned out brick workshop approximately a century old) will often be sent away in fear, and if scare tactics don't work she'll settle for humiliation.
Raglin Physiology: A hybrid of physical and ethereal, Raglins are often referred to ghosts. Individuals with a strong connection to the Ether will on occasion, when close to death, find their consciousness moved from their physical bodies and into something else, their new form being between the realm of the Ether and the Material. It is speculated that the anomalous cryptids that are often assumed to be from the Ether are those responsible for ether hybrids, the dominating theory being that those close to death that are visited by an Ethereal will sometimes unite, creating a new being. In the case of raglins, the conscious mind of the recently deceased is moved into a nearby fabric facsimile, usually a plush or doll, that is then reformed into a raglin. The process is often slow, and the newborn raglin rarely retains memories of their former life while still maintaining many of their personal quirks.
Physically, they are small, ranging between three and four feet tall, though their body is somewhat amorphous, capable of growing, shrinking, and reforming in short bursts. Raglins have an exceptional amount of energy that the can channel into various tasks, usually focused around fabric, though the individual's capabilities can vary. Skilled raglins can subsume themselves into fabrics temporarily, hybridizing themselves with plush toys or pillows. Such a process often grants those objects the raglin's features for the duration.
While the appearance of raglins can vary greatly, some consistencies remain; they are humanoid, have long pointed ears, and seem to be covered in cloth, though the material, color, and texture can vary. It is also up for debate whether or not the fabric is clothing or part of their body, as no raglin has ever been witnessed without their covering. The underlying body of the raglin is also widely debated, as most of their extremities are textured like silk or satin, but their eyes and mouth seem to be hollow, devoid of mass. Raglins are technically sexless but often retain their gender identities of their former selves. As such no raglin is ever born, new members of the species being strictly created through the still elusive and unstudied process of Ether hybridization.
With their innate connection to the Ether, raglins posses no need to eat or sleep, but have been known to enter a state of dormancy, a sort of hibernation that can last an unknown length of time. Raglins never seem to age, and their eventual 'death' seems to do with a general sense of apathy.
Raglin Sociology: As they are created individually, raglins as a general whole tend not to value kinship. Most are aloof, usually only ever growing attached to a few individuals. As such, Raglins do not have an established society, more or less integrating themselves into other cultures. The commitments a raglin may accept can range greatly, from adapting an "urban hermit" lifestyle to actively engaging in society, finding jobs and establishing networks, though the latter is far more rare.
Stitches specific quirks:
-Her mouth is a set of six strands of yarn. When she opens it, a tear is formed in the fabric of her face, that reweaves itself when she closes it. This doesn't harm or damage her in any way
-Her scarf is of variable length, and she can use it as an extension of her will, be it to lasso, whip, or ensnare.
-She is exceptionally powerful even by raglin standards. her cloth manipulation can reweave individual fibers at will in mere moments with flawless execution, and she doesn't exhibit any strain. She can also telekinetically lift and move large objects with fabric, and the true extent of her strength has yet to be tested.
-When she is present, her home is often flowing with activity, various used plush toys floating near the ceiling while being mended and repaired. She will often animate undamaged plush toys as 'helpers', extensions of her subconscious will.
-Backstory: In her former life, she was a black and pink Harthrabit, and the daughter of a renowned toy maker. In her youth she met and befriended a woodland cryptid she referred to as her 'fairy' friend, largely dismissed by others as a product of an active imagination. After many years, she took up her father's trade into adulthood, only to have it come to a premature end when the workshop caught fire. Blocked from escape and near death from smoke inhalation, her childhood fairy friend found her and disseminated its ethereal body to rescue her, saving her consciousness and implanting it in a nearby plush toy. She remained dormant for several years before awakening to the sound of a demolition team ready to break down the old workshop, an effort she immediately repelled out of instinct. She's protected her workshop ever since without any memory of her former life or the sacrifice of her fairy friend.
