This is a bit of an exaggerated hypothetical case, but the feelings of the artist is still the same.
I think this is the result of someone in an odd position like myself -- mostly known for drawing silly comics, but my own personal interests are more on the serious side of art. I dislike drawing cutesy art when it's not in the format of comics where the narrative is more important than the quality of the art.
I don't blame people though for assuming that I like drawing cutesy stuff based on what they see on the surface level.
Anyway, this comic is just for a bit of a laugh, and maybe a little cathartic for myself.

I like this vent art hun. It's probably more relatable to a ton of artists than myself but still a nice comic regardless
Heh, I guess it does count as vent art. It is a little more cynical than my usual.
I can imagine you'd also been through all this too at some point.
Unfortunately I have multiple times. But I try to also take it as a learning experience.
It just lets me know where I need to be more firm about certain parts in my ToS for next time.

I hope Blaze Thunderpants is happy, where ever they are.
With a name like that, I'm sure they're a very satisfied individual!
Yeah I've had a 1 or 2 people do similar things, luckily it's rare. I usually do the first one or two changes and then if they keep wanting changes with every update I tell them to hit the brakes.
can imagine this being a fairly common occurrence, but, eh not gonna lie... it got a giggle outta me. xD
nah, it's not so common. especially after I tightened up my rules in my ToS. Most of the people who commission me these days are very reasonable customers.
This is why I usually like to ask an artist I'm working with not only the types of things they will/won't do, but also their favorite type and hated types of things to work on, or where they feel their talents lay.
That's the sort of courtesy I love seeing. It makes the process enjoyable for both the artist and customer.
Right? I mean, if I'm gonna get something I want, I wanna make sure the one making it isn't going to be staring at it going "Uuugh, I hate this. But money is moneyyy~"
I'm a bit of the opposite in that I'm often too like- nervous to ask for changes, unless they're glaring
and thats exactly the reason, why im feeling terrible and annoying at every single change i suggest at an Artist for my comission ://D XD
You say this is a hypothetical case but I feel that at some point, some where, this has happened. Also a good reason why most artists will ask for a description beforehand, nice work!
Oof, I can't stand people like that. Me personally, I just give the artist my idea and the thing I need to see and then let there imagination take it from there. Once it's past sketch though, too late for changes, i'm not going to bother the artist out of respect
There are two camps of thought when it comes to commissions it seems. Some people want to see an artist's interpretation of the character, while others want to see an accurate portrayal of the character. An artist's goal is usually to try and achieve both, but sometimes it can be difficult to do that.
The fact that you added “LOL” and “XD” makes me feel targeted. Lol
I know this comic is satire but you don’t understand. I use XD and lol way too often in convos with comms or with friends
the reason I add Lols and XD is to not sound rude or entitled. I sometimes feel like I ask too much or I push the boundaries even if it’s not even close to exaggeration. I want to keep the conversation positive and light, and not make the artist feel bad.
But that’s just, is it the same for others?

Yeah, it depends on the artist. Some artists prefer a more professional/formal correspondence and wouldn't care much for the 'lol' and 'XD'. Other artists probably do appreciate the positive and lighter approach to conversation.
That’s true
It very much comes to personal taste and atmosphere

Not familiar with the process of taking commissions, but I don't even need to be to easily see how that is such a thing in every way.
Make sure you set limits on what kind of edits you can do! if someone doesn't include a collar or a piece of clothing in a comm it's not your fault for not drawing it.
I've been bad about updating specific policies like that. But yeah, specificity does really help to ease alot of potential headaches like that.
pff this is an exaggerated.... but one commission of mine actually went this way xD
Thanks. Yeah the comic does encompass a mixture of different feelings, some more obvious than others. Important and unimportant. Funny and sad. A fun comic to make!
I absolutely *hate* when I tell someone that 'hey I can't change the linework again after this, are you sure that you're happy?' and then an hour later once your done lining everything they want a new jacket or something on the character. Like...I warned you, please don't do this to me.
Honestly this is a HUGE mood for alot of artists. from art trades to commissions there's always that one person that has to be extremely nitpicky and OVERLY demanding put a huge delay on everyone else's orders..
I always try to have a clear idea of what I want before I go getting a commission, and try to take the artist's style into account when I do (though color saturation is not something I am familiar enough with to judge on ^^; possibly more. But I won't ask for someone who normally does a rather cartoony art style for a more realistic looking piece, as a good example)
and I always feel awful when asking an artist to change something that I don't like about it
Makes me feel like I'm gonna wind up on r/choosingbeggers or something

And thats why i try to do two things. One, Make sure i know what i want and try to keep any editing that might need to be done to smaller more important details. and Two. Make sure its something the artist might want to do, if its not their interest or thing i try to adjust so we can both appreciate the product.
i feel like im too picky with art sometimes.
'^^ given how infrequently im able to get commissions these days I guess I just want to make sure they're right. I still worry im being a pain and I can't always tell where the limit is.
I'm always self concious about it and IDK what the right thing to do is '^^

I had a brief chuckle after seeing that your name is Blaze.
And yeah that's perfectly understandable. I guess it's always helpful when artists are able to clearly convey the limits in terms of edits in their ToS. Otherwise it can be hard to tell how much edits is too much.

mhh.
also, its been a while since ive commente don anything of yours now i think about it. dont think ive said a whole lot this year in general really.
can't honestly remember the last time we talked at all, but this pic definitely struck a nerve with that whole just... i'm in discussions with someone about comms now and he says its fine but i still feel super embarrassed about it each time i see something that doesnt look right.
at least in my case im not asking for the entire premise of the picture to be changed i guess. "monsterous dragon" into "cute dragon" and all that. it's usually more just things like posing and expressions. i still feel bad about it though...
would probably be easier if i could articulate my thoughts into words better to begin with

Pff Yeah i can see that happening.
But if you order a Monstrous looking dragon.. You would think too stay with the idea. the only corrections that should be made is if something looks wrong or something missing
Also poor derg artist *Pat pats*

Ngl if I was an artist and I had to deal with shit like that *loads shotgun with intent to use.* just saying
I always try to be very clear about what I want from the onset, and leave anything I don't specify up to the artist, usually letting them know that.
<~ Graphic designer: Knows feeling all too well. I just add a clause that says something like, "3 major redos/changes Additional redos/changes are X$ a piece.
By all means. Be indecisive.
By all means. Be indecisive.
This is why I've seen suggested that artists include that only so many major changes can be made before additional charges.
Oh i can defenetly relate to this. A good compromise i usually get with my customers is that i will agree to do all the changes they want ( within reason though, of course ), if they let me do a version of their commission that i am happy with to post in my own gallery. ( this usually applies for small changes, of course ).
The way I see it, when I commission an artist, I'm paying for their interpretation of the thing I want to be drawn, so even if the end result isn't completely accurate to what I think I wanted, complaining about it or asking for significant changes is silly.
Whenever I get a commission I try to put everything in the first post so there's fewer corrections. Even then I'm always scared of becoming like this.
Never really understood why some people do this. When I commission an artist, I tend to think about that artist's style, what parts of the idea I have will it exemplify best. An artist with a lot of attention to detail is great for highlighting more serious parts of a character. An artist that frequents "chibi" style is perfect for goofy and silly pieces. I love seeing how an artist sees my character, that's part of the fun for me.
I understand totally -_-''' people ask one thing and when it's done change it all or add a millions of things with it without thinking that can change the price of the commission or you need to do something else so saying all those things in the first message would have be a thousand time better.
Oh so this is how those splotches of paint get into art museums! You've made a real timeless classic, I think.
Always good seeing more serious looking Dragons when they do appear. Grandiose and big
i know that feeling well and always fear to be such customer thats why i almost never point out errors to artists in art i commission because i feel like i am just a bother to them ^^;
And then there is me, feeling bad if I spot minor a mistake or a misunderstanding xD
Now I can't get the image out of my head of huge dragon humming "The Art of the Dress" from MLP:FIM.
Thank you.
Thank you.
