Beneath the Severer's Eye
#17 - Phantom
At the center of the grand Arxyn capital stands a tower that Alurians never built: Arxysen. This alien edifice emerged from the waves long before the city was constructed around it, and at the time, it was thought to be haunted by spirits. When Noth the sun-touched arrived from the east and calmed its otherworldly residents, it became a monument to the Infinites. The Arxyn government moved into the structure after the last war, though carving usable chambers into the naught-stone is a process that can take years for even a single room.
Arxysen has been growing slowly but steadily upward. The city's central plateau sits approximately 550 feet above sea level, so one can only imagine what goes on in the carefully-guarded undertower that stretches beneath the plateau. Conspiratorial types are quick to invent wild theories, from weapons research, to shadow governments, to prisons for aliens and Infinites, and so on. Most of everyone else agrees it's probably just a bunker and archives.
All that said, not everyone copes well with being near or inside Arxysen. Some people describe feeling a 'presence', with varying degrees of distress. It's estimated that approximately 1/35 Alurians experience minor mood alterations when brought inside, with more severe psychological impacts being referred to as Tower Aversion Syndrome. With continued exposure, about 60% of cases will experience symptom reduction or complete acclimation.
