Yes, we are revisiting this piece for an upcoming new one and I speak a bit of spanish and I don't see where you are getting the second is from.

Talk to me seven years ago and I might have had an answer. (very likely an incorrect one, I was a shitty Spanish student to begin with.) But ask me now and my answer is pretty simple. "No hablo Espanol."

If I recall correctly, my logic for the sentence being 'wrong' was that 'nombre' is already functional, as in "Mi nombre Mahatma." So adding in that "es" although, fine, is still redundant. Like, if you said it to someone, they'd look at you weird, since to a speaker it would seem clunky.

I have never heard that about nombra. Really the correct way to introduce yourself is "Mi llamo Mahatma" in which case the es would be redundant because llamo is the possessive form of I am called" already and is conjugated as a verb. By nombre from my understanding is translated to the noun "name", and therefore it wouldn't be redundant to say Mi nombre es.

But that is just from all the spanish I've learned in the 7 years since your original comment.
