Aidan was a connoisseur of Collector’s Editions of various pieces of media. Various shelves in his house were devoted to the various perks that those special editions held, ranging from art books to full blown figurines. It was all something he prided himself in, and he was always excited to add something to that ever growing collection. This all leads us to now.
He was walking to his living room with a box in hand. The newest addition to his collection was Mad Rat Dead’s Heart Pounding Edition. The moment he heard the soundtrack in the trailers, he knew he had fallen in love with this game. The demo only made that stronger. And now he possesses the collector’s edition of the game.
Aiden opened the box, staring at its contents with glee. Besides the physical copy of the game, it also possessed a cassette with the game’s soundtrack alongside the digital download, and the digital art book, all neatly placed inside the collector’s box. Not much to put up on his shelves, but it was still good to him.
He placed the cassette up on a shelf and made way to his computer, ready to redeem the digital contents. This all led him to spending an hour attempting to download the digital soundtrack. It was strange considering he had a pretty good Internet connection, but it wasn’t like he had anything better to do. The digital soundtrack itself contained every song within the soundtrack, although something else was showing itself to be peculiar…
There was a single stray file that didn’t fit with any of the volumes titled 00_ricotta_arrhythmia.
He was curious as to what this file contained. A bonus track, perhaps? He clicked on the file to hear its contents, with the audio player popping up and loading it. After a few seconds, the file successfully loaded and he heard… absolutely nothing. Or at least that’s how it started. Audio did begin to fade in, but it was less music and more an eerie static coupled with distorted sounds. It wasn’t really disturbing as it was just… off putting. Aiden continued to let the file play as he started coming up with reasons as to why it’s so like that. Perhaps it got corrupted? Maybe it was a file that wasn’t meant to be downloaded but was accidentally downloaded anyway? Maybe-
Aiden was pulled out of his thoughts when an error message showed up saying the file was unplayable. But weirdly enough, the static continued to play through his headphones. It took another full minute for the file to actually stop playing. He took his headphones off and stared at the computer in confusion. There was a feeling that whatever had just happened was not good.
He stood up and reached his hand out to turn off the monitor when a sharp pain began to radiate through his chest. Aidan collapsed on the floor as discomfort spread through his body. His neck and arm felt increasingly tight, he felt dizzy and lightheaded, and it was getting harder to breathe. He shakily stood up as he tried to make his way to the phone on the other side of the couch to call for help, but he collapsed again on the ground as conflicting feelings of warmth and chills filled his body.
Aidan rolled over onto his back, hissing in pain. He felt simultaneously constricted and not, forcing him to pull open his button-up shirt. He needed help but he couldn’t gather enough strength to try. Everything hurt, he felt practically paralyzed. He flopped a hand on his chest, noticing that it felt… deeper? He wanted to look at it, but his neck hurt too much to try. He was trapped within his own body.
What Aidan couldn’t see was what happened to his chest, which had now looked to cave in on itself. The depression continued to deepen as each second passed, but this wasn’t the only change he was undergoing. Patches of light and dark grey fur grew on his hands, the limbs becoming blunter and animalistic in the process. His nails sharpened into claws, causing more pain in his fingers as they grew out. A rubbery feeling was felt in his hands as orange straps materialized and encased his hands, the palms glowing with red as the objects became full-fledged gloves.
Heat razed his body as fur continued to prick through his skin. His clothing felt baggier as he could swear he was beginning to shrink. He shakily tried to raise a hand in front of him, only to find a rubber gloved paw. It was at that moment when he screamed, unable to grasp what had happened to his hands. Aiden rolled over to his side, watching his arms bulk in size as his size continued to shrink. A stinging sensation filled half his body as the skin momentarily split apart, and then scarred as stitches threaded themselves into the newly made wound. More and more grey fur grew across his skin as the transformation progressed.
The man’s pants could barely fit his short stature anymore, as did his shirt. His legs shrunk into his waist, bone and muscle vanishing into meer mounds of flesh and fur. The soles of his feet became longer, being covered in light tan fur. His toes were now smaller, the big toes on each foot moving with his lengthening feet while the rest remained stationary. They now looked more rodent-like, and thanks to Aidan’s new size he could see. An uncomfortable feeling grew from the base of his spine, which soon bursted into a worm-like tail.
Sweat beaded on his forehead and fear and panic continued to ravage his mind. He shakily stood up and looked down at his chest, his body still wracked with pain as he watched what was left of his humanity shrink away into that of a chubby, grey animal. He finally noticed his caved in chest, slowly placing his paw to it and feeling it. The fur moved up what remained of his neck and began to cover his face. His nose blackened as his face pushed out into a muzzle, teeth sharpening within his mouth as the process continued. Whiskers poked out on the sides of his face, twitching innocently. The fur covered his ears, making them pointier and animalistic, meanwhile his hair shortened and changed color to match. A sharp pain was felt in one ear as a tag clipped itself into it. Aidan began to hyperventilate over the changes, feeling more of his skin split on his face like it did on his body.
And then everything paused.
He couldn’t breathe. He flopped onto his face as he began to twitch and convulse. The cave in within his chest disappeared into a large, bloodless circular hole, with muscle and ribs cartoonishly sticking out of the sides. His heart was the only vital organ that seemed to remain, and it’s shape morphed into that of an actual heart shape. The now rat continued to twitch on the floor, eyes white as he slowly tried to come to his senses.
Aidan blinked his eyes as he realized he had face planted in his shirt. He stood up, a feeling of overpowering weakness settling in his bones. He looked down at his body, pawing the surface with his new paws. Then he touched something soft and squishy. An eye twitched as a new sound welled up in his vocal cords. To an outsider, it’d be a high pitched squeak, but to him it was a deep sounding scream.
“WHY AM I A RAT?!”
He was a rat.
He was Mad Rat of all rats.
…
No, this couldn’t be-
He was pawing his body frantically, this had to be a dream, or some coma induced nightmare! He must’ve had a heart attack and now he was on life support or something. He began to laugh nervously as he tried to rationalize the situation, this wasn’t real!
...and if this wasn’t real…
He nervously laughed again, if none of this was real then what stopped him from being a rat! Something clicked in the former human’s mind as he realized the potential of this dream. He could literally be Mad Rat! He smiled as he began to think of all the possibilities this opened up… except he lacked one thing.
A hatred for humans.
Or had he? Something was beginning to grow more prominent in his mind. Memories of long days in a cage, a boring life in a lab. Vague human memories dissipated as memories of being a lab rat replaced them. But more importantly… he felt mad. These memories made him pissed off. Humanity was the reason why he was experimented on during his life. Humanity was the cause of his problems. And he wanted vengeance.
A sudden pain surged in his head. His eyes whitened as he flopped face first on the ground, everything fading to black.

The rodent was rudely awakened from his… nap? He was unsure if it was a nap, but it was something. Judging from his surroundings, he and Heart were still in the forest. His heart zipped in front of him, “Mad Rat! Are you okay?”
Mad Rat raised an eyebrow, “Yeah, I think I am.”
Heart crossed their arms, “You passed out again!”
“Really? It didn’t feel like that… had the weirdest dream too.”
“Did you see the Rat God again?”
Mad Rat stopped for a moment to think, “Nope. All I remember is I was… human? It was absurd.”
“Perhaps it’s an omen of some kind.”
The rodent laughed, “Yeah right. It’s a coincidence, that’s all. Now c’mon, we gotta get back to the lab!”
Heart would raise an eyebrow if they had one. This rat was mad for sure, but if this was his dream...

Ricotta Arrhythmia - Mad Rat TF/MC/LBH
Part 2 of my Rodent Week event!
Mad Rat is an interesting TF to write, to say the least. Beyond stuff like shrinking, having a hole form in your chest for no reason is a bit of a challenge to do. I think I did it alright though! I also tried to do another TF that was initiated by an audio trigger, and made said audio trigger sound like it could be a song in the soundtrack. The last bit I also wanted to try was some form of embracing the MC, which I should probably do more of at some point.
Also I highly recommend playing Mad Rat Dead if you haven't already, it's a solid rhythm-platformer mix with a great story and an awesome soundtrack!
