Bentayga is a shaman, and his duty is to deal with different kinds of spirits. With time, some of them become allies, and may assist him when he really needs it.
His shape and mind can't change, as his own patron spirit doesn't allow so, but their timely aid may be just what they needed to get out of a tight situation.
Not all spirits are animals. But being surrounded by literal stone can be quite handy. Named after an enormous volcanic spire himself, Bentayga didn't take long to gain Crag's favour.

This one seems to me one of the most interesting, the idea that he can use spiritual rocks as defensive and offensive armor is very cool, he spirit of the earth lends its strength to the shaman is a sign that whoever wants to confront the guardian, has the nature itself against him!
The usefulness of this is simple- there's rocks everywhere! From the forest soil to concrete on a knocked down wall, or asphalt in the middle of a lost road. Very slow and heavy, but when you have no other choice but to cross covered territory!
Definitely the spirit ally to call upon when faced with truly overwhelming odds... How do you kill a stone?
And how do you prevent a stone from just... being surrounded by more stone? Most things come from it!
May make him slow and not agile, but that's what the claws are for, anyway :D
