It was time to redo my microraptor for the 200th time, but this time, I'm much more satisfied with it! I draw wings so often yet they're still so hard to really kinda pull off. And microraptor is like all wings. I like these more though!
Anyway! Microraptor is a tiny, four-winged paravian dinosaur! This basically means any birdlike dinosaur of the clade Paraves, which are more closely related to birds than to oviraptorosaurs. Birds, members of the paraves, are the only living dinosaurs we have now. From tiny hummingbirds to deadly cassowaries, sea eagles, and everything in between their incredibly diverse rainbow of species.
Microraptors, like archaeopteryx and anchiornis, have amazingly preserved fossils that provided evidence of the evolutionary relationship between dinosaurs and birds. Here is my favorite example! You can see its pennaceous feathers (feathers that have a stalk or quil) that would have formed aerodynamic surfaces on the arms, legs, and diamond-shaped tail fan that likely aided stability in its glide.
We also know microraptor was black in color with a lovely iridescent sheen! By analyzing the fossilized melanosomes (pigment cells) in the fossil by scanning electron microscope techniques, the researchers of the Beijing Museum of Natural History compared their arrangements to those of modern birds. In Microraptor, these cells were shaped in a manner consistent with black, glossy coloration in modern birds.
This lil guy is $25, comment to claim the design!
