Due to a recent study about a newly discovered species of plant, Dial flocked to the mountainous region it was supposedly found in. Rao and Fae both agreed to go with Dial. However, the moment they found out that camping would be involved, they decided to stay with the luxuries of modern life. As the fluffy, dark blue protogen was double checking his camping supplies, he asked “Why not?” His boxy, black face visor displaying a red question mark along with the normal red triangles and mouth.
The white and peach colored five tailed kitsune gave her reason. “I’ve lived for a little over 600 years. Air conditioning and indoor plumbing are two of the best things to have been invented during my lifetime. I am not going to give them up.” Her head tilted to the side, causing her bell collar to ring. Sitting on the bed, her white tipped brown tails splayed out, Rao continued. “I don’t know why YOU of all people would want to go camping. Wouldn’t you be like a fish out of water? Or… a toaster without toast?”
“Not really.” The protogen said, the glass like tube tail with orange rod and rings in the center shifting fluidly with his movements. He was certain that he had enough supplies to last the three-night camping trip, and the necessary items to take samples and document the new plant species if he found it. “I find that camping to be very relaxing. The sounds of the forest, the smell of a campfire, the natural beauty of the world around us, it’s something you can only really experience by camping.” Turning back to look at his companions, he found both of them looking at him with confusion on their faces. “What? I can’t have a hobby that DOESN’T involve videogames or research?”
“No, you’re allowed to have multiple hobbies.” The shiny Zacian said, her blue hair and fur sparkling in the light. Fae was sitting upon her long, flat tail, her white arms and legs crossed. “It’s just seems a little out of character for you.” She said, scratching her natural golden crown with her black fingers. “I never cared for camping myself, especially when indoor life became so much better. Besides, there is a lot of fun to have in this town and the towns near here. Camping out for three days would take away most of the time we have here.”
Sighing, Dial said “Alright. I won’t force you to join me.” Putting on the very large and well packed backpack. “Welp, no time like the present. Have fun.”
Lyra had been moving expertly through the underbrush. It wasn’t her first time camping out in a new forest, and she doubted it would be her last. The eastern dragoness had two purple horns on her head, in between the two horns was luminescent neon green hair that goes down the back of her head and goes all the way down her back to the tip of her tail. Inversely, a patch of black scales runs down from her throat to the underside of her tail. She had two long, green whiskers protruding from the end of her elongated snout that seemed to float in the air. Her ears were long, with some green fur inside them. Since she was an eastern dragon most of her body was covered in fur. The fur along her face, elbows, and legs were lilac colored. From the worn shirt and jeans, you could some markings and black stripes in the lilac fur. The rest of her body was covered in a dark, black fur. Along her sides, glowing green fur wedges were present. Similarly, Lyra had glowing green scales patterns long her arms and fingers. As for the rest of the pitch-black fur, it was dotted by glowing white and green star like patterns. Along her thick, long tail the green star patterns were unique, having lines in the fur connecting them into constellation like patterns.
An experienced camper and explorer, Lyra has lived mostly outdoors as a drifter, never staying in one place for too long. Most people who had met her would have describe her as aloof. She never felt comfortable showing her true feelings with most people she met. Whenever she has tried to settle down, she would try to grow out of her shell. But she just never seemed to be able be herself, so she would pack up and leave for the one setting she felt most comfortable in, the wilderness. She loved camping and being in the outdoors, she felt so free there. The dragoness especially loved exploring new places, so she would travel to new places to try out. She had been in the area for only a few days, so she was still new to the forest. She might spend a few more weeks here and check out the local towns.
Checking the sun, Lyra realized that night would soon be upon her, so she looked for a nice clearing to set up camp. After about 14 minutes of searching, the starry dragoness found the perfect clearing. The clearing was large, able to hold about 7 average sized tents. It was cleared out of most of the typical forest undergrowth, with what appeared to be the remains of a firepit in the center. Lyra guessed this must be a frequently used spot for local campers. Setting her pack down, she started to pitch her tent.
After quickly setting up her tent, Lyra had plenty of time before the sun set to make a campfire. She gathered up some kindling and fuelwood to prepare the campfire. Once the wood was set up, Lyra used her fire breath to light it up. The green flames spewed forth from Lyra’s mouth, an act as natural to her as breathing. Letting up on her flames, the campfire was set ablaze, the green flames eventually replaced by the usual red fire. Opening her bag, she rummaged for marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers, only to find out she had forgotten to restock the crackers. “Tch. And I was in the mood for some s’mores.”
As Lyra lamented the lack of crackers, she heard some loud rustling nearby. Standing up and looking in the direction, she could hear footsteps approaching. “Who is there?” Lyra called out.
That’s when a very strange looking person appeared. Covered in fluffy dark blue fur and armor that looks like it was made of uneven scrap metal, the person responded. “Ah, sorry. I wasn’t expecting anyone out here. My name is Dial.” The protogen’s teal gear symbol on the face wedges and thighs turned with the passing seconds. His singular unicorn like horn and orange tipped ears were covered in leaves and twigs. It seemed that that he had a difficult time of traversing the forest. Brushing some of the debris off of himself, he continued. “I am a researcher.”
Lyra was a little concerned by this person’s looks. Through Lyra’s travels she had met a few Protogens, so the armor Dial had set of some alarm bells with how damaged it looked. They were covered in leaves, twigs, and dirt, like someone who was struggling to get through the forest. These two things made him look rather worse for wear. What helped her believe he wasn’t that skilled at this was the fact he was standing dangerously close to poison ivy. “Are you okay?” she asked.
Dial, still examining his surroundings, replied “I believe so. Although I’ve never camped so deep in the wilderness.” Finally noticing the poison ivy, he moved away before beginning again. “Most of my camping was done in public campgrounds and such.”
Lyra shook her head, “Not that. I mean, you look pretty dinged up. Like you’re put together by spare parts.” Lyra pointed at some of the jagged metal and screwed on pieces that composed Dial’s armor. She continued in a concerned voice, “Are you sure you should be out here in your condition?”
The dark blue protogen was fast to dismiss Lyra’s concern. “Ah, that. I am perfectly fine. I modified my armor to look like this.” Turning his head and looking to the side, the protogen continued, a little embarrassed. “I… I did it because I thought it would look cool.” After an awkward pause, Dial changed the subject. “It is getting late. Would you mind if I shared this campsite with you?”
Lyra really had no reason to object since she didn’t make the campsite. Returning back to her aloof attitude, the dragoness coldly said, “If you want to.”
Lyra watched as Dial unpacked his tent and set it up. While he was a little slow, it wasn’t sloppy work. It was a sign that he had some idea of what he was doing. Without crackers to complete the s’mores, Lyra focused on making her dinner. By the time both Lyra and Dial were done with their own tasks, the sun had long since set.
Once Dial was done putting up his tent, he sat down by the campfire. The protogen noticed the chocolate and marshmallows Lyra had set aside earlier. “Ah, were you making s’mores?”
Lyra shook her head, her glowing whiskers flowing in response. “I didn’t have any graham crackers.”
“No problem.” Dial said, before reaching into his pack, pulling out his own s’mores supplies. “I brought my own crackers.” Opening the box, the Protogen offered it to Lyra. Lyra hesitated slightly before taking some. The two each took a fluffy marshmallow and put it on the end of a stick, holding it over the crackling fire. They sat silently, observing their mallows as they turned a perfect golden brown. Once done, they put the roasted mallow on top of the chocolate and lower cracker. Taking the second cracker, they smushed the treat, pouring the gooey sugar out along with the stick. Their first s’mores were done.
Lyra took a decent bite out her own. Pulling back, the strand of warm marshmallow stretched from her mouth to her treat. She licked the sugary remains off her lips with her green tongue. Meanwhile, Dial was absolutely starving since he had not had dinner yet. Opening his nanite mouth wide, he just stuffed the full smore into his mouth. Closing his mouth, crunching sounds could be heard from Dial as he was preparing a second s’more.
Lyra paused to ask a question, “So, what is a researcher like yourself doing so far out in the woods all alone?” Looking to Dial, the fire light illuminated his figure in the ever-darkening night. The campfire reflected off his black, glassy visor.
Dial began to answer, without looking up from his roasting mallow, “Recently, a new species of plant life was discovered in the region. I was hoping to find it and get a sample to study for a bit.” He paused when his mallow caught fire. After blowing out the fire, he considered the burnt treat too far gone, and tossed it into the fire. “I originally traveled to the local town with two friends, but both of them didn’t seem to enjoy the idea of camping. So, here I am.” Dial looked back at Lyra, seeing her green and white glowing hair, whiskers, and stars contrasting the red hues of the campfire. “How about you?”
Lyra responded in a flat tone, “I’m just a wanderer.” Her face gave of an air of apathy. Dial felt there had to be more but resisted his growing curiosity. He just met her; it would be wrong of him to just pry into her personal life. After that, the two made unimportant small talk until the fire died down. The two went to their respective tents for a supposed night of rest. Right before going to bed, Dial detached his tail to better fit the cot.
Dial isn’t typically a restless sleeper, but tonight he just kept drifting in and out of sleep. At approximately 3 AM, Dial heard the sound of a zipper opening. A little groggy, Dial looked to see if it was his tent being opened. Noticing it wasn’t, he figured that it must be Lyra. Listening, he heard Lyra start to walk away from the campsite. Dial believed that she must be answering nature’s call, and just laid there. After about 20 minutes, Dial hadn’t heard footsteps to signal her return. A little concerned, Dial decided to get up to check to see if she was okay. The protogen got off his cot and exiting his tent, leaving his tail behind. Adjusting his sensors to night vision, Dial headed in the direction he heard Lyra go in.
The Protogen kept walking until he reached the edge of the tree line. Stepping out, he found himself on a rocky cliff. Close to its edge, he spotted Lyra’s glowing figure sitting on the cliff’s edge. Before speaking up, he noticed that Lyra’s head was tilted upwards and her focus skyward. Dial realized what she must be looking at. Switching off his night vision, he looked up as well.
The view he saw was almost indescribable. The night sky was filled with what seemed like countless stars. The typical inky black of space was filled with light of the distant stars. These pinpoints of lights varying by size shown brilliantly with the lack of light pollution. The researcher spotted the cosmic dust clouds that formed a jagged, dark line that stood out against the rest of the stars. Dial had seen pictures of this phenomena, often referred to as the “Great Rift”. Of course, he could also see how it got its less commonly used name of “Dark River”. It was mesmerizing.
Dial called out to Lyra, but she seemed so lost in the night sky that she didn’t notice. The Protogen approached Lyra, getting right next to her. He noticed her earlier stony face had melted away. In its place, a wide smile. Her emerald eyes sparkled with an indescribable joy. Dial wasn’t sure if it was just the lighting, but the stars on Lyra seemed to be glowing brighter than before. Putting a paw on her shoulder, Dial only said “Lyra?” The dragoness jumped from the surprise. “Ah, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. I just happened to hear you leave and never return.”
Lyra looked into his eyes and didn’t really understand how he could express such concern through those glowing triangles for eyes. “Well, you need not worry about me.” The dragoness tried to regain her aloof cover, but she just couldn’t. “But thank you for your concern. I just had to see the night sky. It was clear tonight, and this area has very low light pollution.” Fixing her gaze back to the sky. “I just… I feel completely at peace whenever I see this sky.”
Dial then asked, “May I sit down?” Lyra just nodded her head. Dial sat right next to the dragoness. The two just took in the gorgeous scenery for a while. Dial then broke the silence. “So, is this what brought you here?”
Lyra shook her head. “No, at least not specifically. In truth, I am a drifter. I’ve tried to settle down, find a place to live but it never felt right.” Lyra’s tail kept shifting as she talked, the scales scraping the stone. “I do like exploring new areas, so whenever I realize it just isn’t working out, I move on.” Lyra paused to let out a long yawn before she continued bearing her soul. “Camping is something I have enjoyed for my entire life, so I usually move onto another area where I can camp. A bonus is that I get to stay away from places with heavy light pollution.” Lying down, she reached a hand towards the sky. “Its just… Whenever I am beneath the starry night sky, I feel like I can be myself. It is the one place I have found that I feel like I belong.”
Without thinking about it, Dial then blurted out “Well, maybe you could try living with us for a while.” Lyra gave Dial a confused look. “Ah. I mean, I am currently living with the two friends I said I traveled here with, Rao and Fae.” He continued on to explain the situation between the three of them. After completing the history of the group, Dial continued his offer. “We might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but we can at least try to help you find whatever you are looking for.” Rather bemused by the sudden offer, Lyra said she would need some time to decide. Afterwards, Dial got up and headed back to his tent for some shut eye. Lyra continued to watch the night sky for another half hour before returning to her tent to sleep.
Lyra and Dial then spent the next two days exploring the forest together. They got to know each other better. Lyra began to open up more, even when not under the starry sky. Regrettably, by the end of the 3 days, Dial was unable to find the new plant species. It must have remained undiscovered for so long for a reason. If Dial was on his own, he would have kept searching until he found the plant or got bored. Since he promised Fae and Rao to return in 3 days, he intended to keep it. Packing up his tent and preparing to leave, Dial asked Lyra once more if she will join him. “While you’ve described Rao and Fae wonderfully, I would at least like to meet them before making my decision.”
The pair made their way out of the forest and into the local town. It was late by the time Dial and Lyra arrived at the hotel. Dial motioned for Lyra to stay there before he introduces her to the others. After Dial opened the door, Lyra heard a voice say “Ah, welcome back Dial. Did you find what you were looking for?”
Dial shook his head. “I unfortunately did not find the plant species I was looking for, Fae.” With a movement of his tail, he gestured Lyra to step forward. “But I did meet someone new.” Entering the room, he stepped aside to let Rao and Fae see Lyra. “This is Lyra. Lyra, this is Rao and Fae. I… gave Lyra an offer to come live with us, for a bit.”
Lyra saw Rao and Fae, and they were exactly as Dial described them. Rao, the five-brown tailed kitsune with a white and peach fur coat, magenta eyes, and sunset hair. She was wearing the fishnet shirt and crop top combo with shorts and a bell collar. Meanwhile, Fae’s blue and white fur was as sparkly as described, with brilliant blue and yellow irises and metal like wings and crown. She was wearing a pink sundress. The starry dragoness cleared her throat. “Hello” she said while giving a small wave.
Rao and Fae both looked a little shocked and confused. Dial began to explain the events of the past few days. He explained that he thought that they could help find a place where Lyra might feel comfortable living in. Once he was done, everyone sat in silence for a while. Rao was the first one to break the silence, “Ah come one, Dial. I can accept you cheating on me with Fae, but now you have ANOTHER girl you’re cheating with. Are you gathering a harem or something?” The kitsune was laughing a little when she said that, indicating she was joking. Walking towards Lyra, Rao extended her hand out towards Lyra. “Nice to meet you. If Dial was willing to offer a place to live to you, then you’re alright by me.”
After shaking hands with Rao, Fae came up to Lyra next. “It is a pleasure to meet you.” Lyra noticed Fae had a very firm grip. “Hopefully we can help you find a place you’ll feel like you belong.”
Lyra, with a huge smile on her face, said “Thank you.” Although something deep inside Lyra told her that she might have just found the place she belonged. Or rather, the people she belonged with.
Just wanted to get this story out and done before I go to sleep. So I can start working on the next one, which will be Cleo's. Hope you enjoy the story.
