~8"x10". gouache.
Earlier this summer I sat out on the front porch with a mirror to make a self-
portrait. It was extremely sunny, which accounts for the scowl as the light
was directly in my face.
Halfway through it, I realized that I didn't like it, and that I didn't actually
want to be painting. So I started to slop paint over it. Then I stopped that
because it seemed like a waste of paint.
I figured I should keep the surface because I'm poor and things to paint on
with good surfaces are hard to come by. So I could always paint over it later.
I just now found it in my studio behind a chest of drawers where it had
fallen. I don't know if I like it or not. When I look at it up close, there is stuff
going on that I like but don't understand.

I actually really like the composition. It's less like a portrait and more like a design exercise if you look at it the right way.
Also, this REALLY reminds me of something in particular, but I'm drawing a blank as far as the artist & piece. I hate it when that happens.

Rate this "MATURE" for MANLINESS!!
MANLINESS I SAY!!! :p

Teehee nice halo.
To be honest I think its a cool piece, especially for what was (probably) originally meant to be a figurative portrait. It looks as if it has a lot of questions to ask.

I'm oddly digging the post-post-post-post-post-postmodernist 'corrupt JPEG' vibe.
I think it's beautiful... well done with as much depth an any other of your 'modern' artists could have created - and probably more. The red at the bottom adds so much...

Manliness? In my FA?!
I love the shading you did, pretty neat and a nice red against the soft blue background.

I see some curious stuff too. 0.o The strokes for hilights create everything from a cloud, to a mountain range... wish I could've seen the complete image before the red paint. Ah well; circumstances.
I've been meaning to ask, so now I shall stop meaning and start doing:
What brand of gouache do you use? And you water it down much when you paint with it, or just kind of go with whatever feels necessary?

I wrote out an answer here, but then put it to a journal entry here.
I've really gotta learn this kind of discipline. These are acrylic glazes yes?
It looks very designed, but at the same time very painterly with your application of the gouache and fearless use of color to describe light and shadow. Also, it reminds me a bit of Kurt Vargo's work. His style is very different from yours but this portrait gave me a similar impression: http://www.vargoart.com/images/port.....ts/hockney.jpg
i first read that as "I didn't actually want to be a painting."
and my first thought was, you could always try being a cake!
idk

I'm so glad you saved this. This is absolutely a finished piece in my eyes. Put it up in a gallery somewhere and you'll have people analyzing it for years trying to decide what your intentions were with the stripe of red, and you can just go " I can't tell you"
it will be great

I think that's my favorite part about being an "artist"
The bullshitting you get to do about your inspiration ad all that

Hahaha, seriously. I love jerking people around with that stuff. Or letting them come to their own over-elaborate conclusions and I just go "it looked cool so I did it". :I
There's something very cool about the red streak. I know it's you trying to cover the painting but it gives it a very odd quality. Also like the fact that you only finished one eye. Over all I like it. Very much.
Ii actually really love the red block at the bottom, how it's not fully opaque, it adds something really interesting to it. I'm glad you stopped and saved it :0
reminds me a bit of some of kent williams work, i think i have recommend him to you before. anyway there are some interesting things going on here. keep up the good work
The large swatch of red along the bottom just sort of makes me think this is what Mark Rothko did-- he painted a concrete scene of whatever he wanted to convey, then painted heavy colours overtop it. It is quite an emotive portrait.
You have lot of talent. I'm not an art expert, but I definitely like your skills :3
I like the colors, and how "mysterious" you look being all half hidden by the red bar and the yellow smudging on the one eye. Also, I like the serious expression and carved features.
But most of all I like that you look like you have a wicked moustache.

I really like this piece. It wouldn't look out of place in the Tate:Modern. I bet that a modern art historian could dissect this and have so much fun with it.
I think this is a brilliant self-portrait. I think it may be capturing you from your own point of view very, very well--whether you like it or not.
Faved and wallpapered, very awesome.

You could always tell people it was painted the day after you had a dream of infinite needles passing through a gory hole in David Letterman's right foot while bananas vomited out census forms that a purple crow kept telling you you had to send in on time, because the toilet was overflowing Orange Crush.
...Or you could just tell them it's a self-portrait that didn't work out.

Art takes us in unexpected directions that we don't notice until we don't understand. That's where learning begins I think.
You look like some Weimar Republic satirical/political artist, someone who does cutting woodcuts and dark drawings of the misery, folly and uncertainty of the era. Must be the mustache.
For some reason the thing I like the most about this is the texture.
And the fact that the expression almost comes off as unsure.
