commission for FurryHovernyan of his character Matt as a water-type gym leader
Matt, Torrent Coast Gym Leader
aka, the Beach Captain
About:
Matt is a laid back bro who is all about the pool party lifestyle. His gym is almost always bustling with energy because when he isn't busy taking challengers, he's usually entertaining party guests! But don't lower your guard, because behind his cool-guy personality is the heart of a powerful pokemon gym leader!
Dressing for his title of Beach Captain, Matt always stands out at his parties with his recognizable captain jacket, and occasionally sports a matching hat. But the formalities stop at the waist, as his signature swim trunks keep him always at the ready to dive into the fun!
Gym
The Torrent Coast gym is located at the tip of a peninsula protruding into the Torrent Sea. The building is grand and extravagant, a coastal mansion. It's front entrance opens into a wide reception hall for gym challengers, and it's upper floors host plenty of guest rooms for Matt's avid party nights.
Outside, the mansion is bordered on three sides by the beach. One section of beach has nets and pleasant, calm waters. Another section has taller waves, curving arcs perfect for surfing. And the third section hosts the docks. Often viewers can spot Matt's party yacht cruising the calmer waters not far from the shore.
Matt does not have a formal battle arena. Rather, gym battles take place on the beach front, a natural environment that allows aquatic and terrestrial pokemon to easily confront one another.
Gym Challenge
In order to earn eligibility to confront Gym Leader Matt, challengers must first conquer three party activities of their choice (in the form of minigames).
Each activity is run by a different gym trainer, such as Swimmers, Surfers, Tubers, Sailers, and Beauties. Failing a minigame will result in a trainer battle.
Games include:
- A water balloon fight
- Beach ball volleyball
- Timed scavenger hunts
- Catch the wingull
- Surfing challenge

Additional:
The gym battlefield is naturally under the Harsh Sunlight condition!
While weather moves can temporarily replace this effect, when the weather move ends, the battlefield will return to harsh sunlight.
Strategy:
Matt utilizes the unconventional strategy of utilizing the beach's sunny weather to support his team. Although the harsh sunlight cuts the power of his team's water attacks, he has found ways to bring it to his advantage!
The sunny weather has the benefit of reducing accuracy on the powerful and popular electric move Thunder, helping protect his pokemon from challengers who seek to utilize that attack. It also provides a means for handling his team's other primary weakness: Grass type pokemon.
Lapras benefits highly from the beach's sunlight, as it's weatherball becomes a Fire type move (and gains further power from the sunlight), turning into a catastrophic attack against potential grass-type opponents.
Lapras also boasts the move Solar Beam, which can fire off without waiting to charge while the sunlight persists!
Ludicolo can perform the same Solar Beam technique, dealing even more damage with its same-type-attack-bonus! Additionally, Ludicolo's synthesis restores even more HP in the harsh sunlight, giving it great longevity in its matches.
But the harsh sunlight would still be a bit of a detriment to some of Matt's team, such as his iconic, signature pokemon, Gigantamax Kingler! To rectify this, Matt has a Pelliper on his team, who's Drizzle changes the weather to rain when it is called to battle! Pelliper can then proceed to engage the opponent, or can U-turn to swap out with another pokemon who will benefit from the rainy weather.
Aside from manipulating his weather benefits, Matt makes critical use of the move Whirlpool. This traps his opponent's pokemon on the battlefield, disabling their ability to swap into more strategically advantageous pokemon, while also chipping away at their HP each turn!
Post Battle Perks:
By defeating Matt, the challenger earns the Torrent badge and the TM Whirlpool.
Challengers who return to the Torrent Coast gym after earning their Torrent badge will have the option to participate in minigames to earn Battle Points!

The gym concept is fascinating, his team strategy makes brilliant use of the locale and turns a water team's usual tactics on its head and he's a hunk too. I love everything about this.
I had a blast designing a beach strategy, so I'm really glad it's appreciated ^w^ Thanks so much!
