It took a couple nights to get over jet lag. The days were a blur of meals and sleepy wandering. But then, just as she was getting over it, she noticed something strange.
Her ears weren’t supposed to be pointy, or vertical. Or furry, for that matter.
She stared into the armoire mirror in the guest room, flabbergasted. Hana couldn’t believe it. She sent her hands up, rustling along bushy, snow white tufts in the lobe and lined, puffy layers of skin. Shivers ran all the way down.
The triangle lobes were obvious. Bright white on a silky black backdrop, fanned out, broad and proud. They tilted in time with her embarrassment. She found a groove where human ears should be. There was nothing hiding behind her bangs, lost in messy bedhead hair, nothing at all, except the most obvious vulpine answer, perched on top of her head.
Hana wired her jaw tight. The job must have followed her here.
“Has this home ever been haunted?” she asked at breakfast.
Layla thought about it over an omelette and cut strawberries. “Not particularly - though this is Cherokee country. I wouldn’t be surprised if there used to be a settlement under this plot’a land here.”
Hana pitched forward over the table, deadly serious. “In my practice, there’s only a few things that can cause a sudden, visible disturbance in the physical body.”
“And what might that be~?” Layla asked, buttering her toast. She was holding back on the amusement for now.
“Possession,” Hana stressed. Her ears pointed upright to emphasize the point. “A fox spirit, if I had to guess. An infection of sympathetic magic, somewhere in the home. You might not even be aware of it! Such a thing is pernicious. It’s very hard to detect until it causes obvious changes in routine. L-like these...”
